Engine Won't Stop Revving...

Hey guys.

I have a 1997 Acura 3.0 CL with about 109k miles. You guys have helped me a lot with this car so far, so I figured this would be the best place to ask.

Just recently (as in roughly 15 minutes ago) I noticed that my vehicle would idle at 1500, then pick up to about 3000 then back down to 1500. I let the car sit for a few minutes to see if it would stop, however, the random revving wouldn't stop.

When the car is in drive, the car will accelerate up to about 30 (without the accelerator depressed, mind you) then will not decelerate without the use of the brakes.

A bit of background information: My car is completely stock other than a K&N filter (put in about 1.5 mos. ago), and aftermarket speakers that were installed about 2 weeks ago. Neither of these modifications had immediate effects such as the one described above.

My guess: Before filling up last week, I had poured in the <b>recommended</b> volume of octane booster/injector cleaner into the tank. Since then, 97.1 miles have been driven, and this is the first time this issue has been noticed. Is my vehicle possibly running a bit rich?

I did a quick search of this site, including a 15 minute dig through the n00b bible, and another on Google, but I haven't gotten much help as of yet. I really appreciate all help!

-Joe

random revving usually means vacuum leak, but it could be something else.

Are there any other signs of a vacuum leak? As in, is there any noises (sucking, blowing, etc.) that I should check for?

I should have included this detail: The revs aren't actually all that random. They're quite consistent, almost as if it was the beat of a song or something.

I did the obvious stuff, making sure the accelerator wasn't depressed at all and that the car was entirely in gear and stuff.

Thanks for the prompt reply!

Mine does that but not as bad. Not sure whats causing that. Where would we have to look for the vacuum leak? Also mine come almost to a crawl when i first step on the gas in the morning right before the first gear change.

vacuum leak= a loose rubber line or bad gasket usually running to or originating at the intake manifold. first thing i would check is all the hoses running to and from the area around the intake as it is pretty newly installed..

Guys i got a really off topic question here, but i would really like some input on this. Got a 02 taurus, took it for inspection and it failed cause they couldnt read the computer. is it possible that the computer could have been turned off? Reason for asking is its been to the dealer 5 times in two weeks trying to diagnose a P1336 problem. I'm thinking they turned it off to prevent the CEL and 1336 code from coming back.

Is it possible that the PCM/computer could have been turned off? Really appreciate any feed back.

i highly doubt the pcm is turned off, but im pretty sure it might be this..the dealer probably cleared the code and then reset the ecu..now when you went to go get it inspected there is something called a readyness feature in the pcm, basically its there to prevent people with check engine lights reseting there ecus and going into emissions tests, the computer reads back as not ready..just wait a few days and take it back in, better yet you should have just payed the dealer to inspect it..

Chris,

Yeah, the random revving eventually went away for me the next time I filled up.

My best guess remains that my octane booster was messing around with the idle speed.

If you did pop an octane booster in your tank, try running it down a bit and filling up a couple gallons to dilute it.

If not, keep asking around on this site, most of these guys will lead you to the answer.

sounds like the Idle Air Control valve. should be located on the bottom side of the throttle body. at least that's where it is on the 2.2l's

It might be a clogged PCV valve or like others said vaccum leak or maybe the TPS sensor
