Cruise Control or Electrical Problem

I have 97 3.0. The car was running fine, cruise control worked great. Until I pulled my cluster out to put some chrome rings on. Unpon starting the car for the first time after the install, the car turns over fine but dies right after. If i give the car gas as I turn over I can keep the car running until I let off the gas. So its not the battery, alt, etc.

So I go over everything I touched for this install and it seems to be the cruise control button. I unplugged the cruise control button and car started! Yea! So after about 2 weeks driving with it unplugged, the car did the same thing. So I plugged the cruise button back in and car ran great! LOL. Month later and now the car does this every couple weeks whether the buttons in or out, but the light no longer comes on the button, and my cruise control does not work at all.

At the moment when my car does this, I have to unplug the battery for a few minutes, let it set and throw em back on.

Ideas anyone? Cruise Button? Cruise Motor? or ECU?

There are no CL's at the local pick n pulls right now, so want to get some second opinions before I start ordering parts online.

Thanks.

never heard anything like that. If its unplugged and it does the same thing it did when it was hooked up until you hook it back up it seems like there is another problem somewhere else besides the button

im willing to bet its in the PCM. because when you unhook the battery and let it sit it resets the PCM. start there

well i know it has to do with the cruise control or something wired to it, because i could hold my foot down on the gas to keep the car going. and while im reving, plug in the button in and the car dies.

whats the pcm? im assuming the cars computer? where is that located? i thought it was by the passanger door but that turned out to be for the abs system.

My response was because you unhook it and it stops messing up and while its still unhooked it starts doing the same thing once again until you hook the switch back up.....this tells me it has nothing to do with the switch if it does it when its hooked up and also does it with it unhooked until you hook it back up. The part of "something hooked to it" may be the problem and I am guessing that would be the ECU (PCM) or what ever you want to call it. What I don't understand is why it worked fine before you did what you did and now it doesn't, thats the point that has me really confused on what happened while you were putting the inserts in

i gotcha. well doing the button swap thing was working for a couple months. it happened so rarely i didnt mind it much. it just recently started acting up weather it was it plugged in or not. the ecu was my next avenue to look into if its not the button. was just hoping someone on the forums had similar experiences.
