Check engine light came on, and flashing light around D4 on the dash gear indicator
Hi, I have a '97 Acura CL 2.2liter. I was cruising down the freeway today at a steady 70mph, when I heard a clunk noise, almost sounded like the transmission shifting gears, but it seemed like it remained in the same gear. A couple seconds later, my check engine light came on and the gear indicator on the dashboard started blinking around D4. Usually that light is solid. It continues to drive normally, so far. The check engine light remains on, but that blinking "D4" went away. Any ideas what this blinking light meant? Could it just possibly be that the tranny wasn't completely in gear and then it slipped in when I was going down the freeway? Would that cause the check engine light to come on and stay on until it was serviced? I know the transmission has problems because it slips when going up hill and when punching the gas. Any input appreciated!

yeah, I've been anticipating it ever since it started slipping. Got quoted 1200 for a used one and 2500 for a rebuild. I think I'll go with the rebuild so I dont have any more problems with it.

you can get a whole new engine and transmission for that price.
When my tranny went i bought a used one off ebay. They run about 500 plus 300 labor. Good luck peace.
p.s. it is very important to service your tranny at least once every 10 months.

I would check what Trans codes are present (flashing D4) before replacing. Sometimes something as simple as vehicle speed sensor (VSS) can cause hard shifting.
If trans is bad, try car-part.com to look for a used trans near your zip code. Go by and inspect yard (where do they store parts; inside or in damaged car?), and inspect replacement trans. If looks good, purchase their insurance (covering labor for installation), and find a good mechanic to install. This way you're protected if you get a bad trans (not likely but possible). Replace all fluids in trans if mechanic doesn't do this.
good luck
