burning oil like mad
My 98 2.3 CL has been great to me for the almost seven years ive had it, but for the past year it has been burning oil on me like crazy(about a quart a week). It probably invloves the valve seals. Ive been thrugh a cat converter already and it looks like ill need another one soon cause they keep getting clogged with oil. Has anyone else experienced this kind of problem? Thanks

A qt/wk sounds high for valve stem seals. Have you checked for leaks? Check the PCV system. If PCV valve or hose is blocked, oil from crankcase is forced into intake and oil consumption will increase steeply.
Valve stem seals usually leak at idle after a stop w/ a fully warm engine. You'll get steady puff's of smoke. When you first accelerate after a prolonged idle, you'll get a billow of oil smoke which quickly diminishes. At steady speed, you may see no oil smoke at all.
Oil bypassing rings usually means steady smoking and increased smoking when accelerating from speed on the road.
good luck

The symptoms I listed in my first post are considered pretty reliable. I'm not aware of a definitive diagnostic method. You might check engine compressions. High engine compressions would also suggest that oil leakage is by the valve stem seals.

Jroc360, if your spewing out white smoke when you accelerate then your burning oil. Its that simple. If your going through a Qt. a week then your burning oil. If you are experiencing what Texas Honda described in his first post then YES you are most likely leaking oil. If you have already gone through one cat because it was covered in oil then I dont see why you havn't taken it to the shop. Unless your absolutely broke as a joke, take your car to a shop!

funny, no one ver suggested just wiping down the exhaust tips after driving a few miles in the morning. Go past the carbon and if it feels remotely slippery (not watery), you may have O-ring issues.
