ABS light, 4-4 code and RR WSS

Hi!

I've searched the threads and tried to follow everyone's advice re: ABS light issues. I'm getting ready to replace the WSS but wanted some feedback.

So I've owned my 97 2.2CL for 10 years and never had ABS problems... until I got part of my car painted this week. Front bumper, rear bumper, right quarters and door. There was paint sprayed errantly in a few places, including in the right rear wheel well. As soon as I drove away from the shop, the ABS light turned on. It's off when I start, and it goes on after I start rolling. I took it to the dealer, they said its a modulator leak and quoted $1200. No thanks.

I pulled the code, I got 4-4. I jacked up the right rear, pulled off the wheel, unbolted it, pulled off the metal cover of the sensor, and tried cleaning the sensor. I also stuffed a rag into the hole where the sensor goes and turned the rotor. I also pulled the B1 fuse in the ABS fuse box. Anyway that didnt work.

I wanted to make sure I'm doing this right, so here are some pics.

So I cleaned everything, and the next picture is all the debris that I got out of the rotor.

I didn't test it with a meter, mostly because I've got to be at work in an hour, and I don't own a meter. Last, anything else you can think of that I should try to clean if they sprayed paint errantly? There wasnt any paint on the WSS or wires. The connections looked fine. The wheel itself has no paint on it, so I'm not sure what's going on.

I ordered the replacement sensor, I just fear that won't be the fix.

Thanks in advance for your help. I'm leaving tomorrow for a week, so feel free to take your time.

Yes, that is wheel sensor. Check connector for damage and check resistance w/ wheel sensor disconnected. Should be 600-800 ohms.

good luck
