99 3.0 CL vibration in steering wheel

Hi everyone,

So last week I bought new tires for the CL and after driving it for the week I have noticed a back and forth vibration in the steering wheel between 65-75 mph. The car was aligned when the tires were put on and the wheels were balanced as well. The vibration seems to go away when I get it up to 80. The vibration is most noticeable on center with no steering input. Also, when coasting downhill at 65-70, it doesn't seem to vibrate as much. From previous experience I would assume this sort of thing is a wheel balancing issue--should I assume the shop I brought it to didn't balance them right? Just wondering if it could be anything else...? Thanks for the input.

take it back and have them check your alignment, balance and tie rod ends. other than that you could just have so jacked up tires. im having the same problem and its just the tires are out of round. nothing really you can do about that except move them to the back. good luck

Thanks, I'm taking it back this weekend. I'm hoping it's just a balance thing that will be easily fixed.

I have the same issue too, but I know for sure both my inner tie rods boots are ripped, wouldn't know if that is the source of the problem though. Hope that helps give you an idea.

Thanks. Yeah, the thing is that it didn't do this before I got new tires, or at least if a problem was there it wasn't noticeable before. I guess I'll figure it out soon.

my son has a acura integra and his was doing the same thing and what was causing his was the ball joint was bad and I had to replace it. It was doing the exact same thing you say yours is doing, would be fine and smooth until you got up to about 55-60 and then would vibrate until you got to around 75 or so and then it would be smooth again. His was really really bad to where it about fell apart once it was taken off so you may want to check this to make sure your ball joints are good because if those things come apart it would be dangerous

Thanks! I'm hoping it's not tie rods or ball joints. How much do you think it would cost to replace them if they were bad?

depends if you can DIY or not...id get OEM balljoints or tie rods...they run a little more but as previously stated if those things come apart its bad news.

jack your car up and with the wheels pointed straight check all four wheels for "play" as you jiggle the tire left/right then up/down. if you have play you need to replace shit. left right play is usually outer tie rods and up down could be either upper or lower balljoint. check to see if the dealer did the lower balljoint recall on ur car.

Just to let you all know, the issue was that the shop's balancing machine wasn't calibrated correctly when they put my new tires on. Today, they said that the machine had been re-calibrated since I had been there last. They rebalanced and the car drives better than ever. No more vibration.

make sure you check your ball joints and if you got the right speed rated tires.
