2.3 Auto Speedometer Error
2.3 Auto Speedometer Error
I just bought a 1998 CL 2.3 Automatic. I was just driving it on a road I am familiar with and was in the right lane and noticed the Speedometer was saying I was doing almost 55, being familiar with this road I know there was no way I would be going that fast with people blowing by me on the left. I decided to check the speed using my GPS and at 50-52 mph I was going about 40. I found speedometer sensors on the internet for $85, but could the car have had its transmission replaced with one from a 3.0? I know most cars tend to be up to 4% off but this is about 25%. Has anyone else had this problem? Will the odometer read 25% off too or is it independent of the speedo? Thanks alot in advance for any info.
It is absolutely impossible and unnecessary to hook a 3.0 transmission to a 2.3 engine. Most likely it is your vehicle speed sensor (VSS) located on top of the transmission. Could also be a faulty gauge cluster. What size tires do you have on the car? That can drastically change your spedo accuracy too.
