1998 Acura CL VSS_ Speed sensor

Hello. Can anyone tell me if the automatic 1998 Acura CL's has a replaceable speed sensor. My speedometer in my car is either bouncing around at idle or staying stuck at around 20mph.I am told that this is a speed sensor issue or a defective instrument cluster.I have an electronic service manual but it does not mention anything about speed sensor replacement in automatics (just manual trannys). Is there some sort or direct connection to the electronics internally in the transmission or is it done through the ABS sensors or is my manaul just wrongAny insight into this issue would be great!

Thanks guys!

it the same for both trans.
the vss is loccated on the rear of the trans under the throttle body/air tube area. and is held on by one 10mm bolt and has a three wire connector on it. check the plug to make sure its making good contact before ripping into it

Sorry to bump this thread, but I am having the exact smae problem.

My question is... should I take it to Acura since I just had the transmission replaced with the 36000 mile warrenty? It's only been two weeks since they changed it and now the speedometer is all messed up.

I don;t want to take it to them if I am gonna get charged. I can change it myself, but if its free, I'll take it. PLus they loan out nice TSX's while your car is being serviced!

I would call the service department and ask them if they'll look at it for free. If you just had a trans replacement I would assume they'll be able to get you in under warranty.

I called, and they were just tellign me to let them look at it. I may call again tomorrow. I am off to my night class.

From what I read it's either the VSS or the speedometer itself which would SUCK, because then the mileage would be all messed up...

Does a new VSS come with a trans replacement?
If yes they should look at it under warranty. Tell them you don't authorize any work that isn't covered under warranty until they contact you (if the problem isn't the VSS).

I believe it does but I am not sure.

Anyway, I really think it is the actual speedometer. Today It got stuck at 20ish MPH again, and I reset the trip meter and it immediatly started to work.

Plus, I have no CEL, and the cruise control works when the spedo is stuck. So, IMO its the whole cluster that needs to be replaced. And that just sucks! I might just use the Speedo thats on my Kenwoods Navi trip computer.

So I unplugged the VSS and the speedometer stayed at 20mph.(This kinda says it is not the VSS)So then I then took it out and cleaned it up and looked at.It is nothing more then a magnetic pickup that generates a small Ac voltage.I measured that voltage while i rotated it around a small piece of metal not precise but just a quick test.It appears to produce a voltage sometime but not consistently.I then installed it back into the tranny at it appeared to work a little better. It would not stay stuck at 20mph as long.I also spoke witht eh delaer and they mentioned something about a second VSS.Anyone heard of anything like that?I am very confused.I want to try the speedo cluster but don't want to spend the money if thats not it.ANy sugesstions?

The only thing I have heard of os there are speed sensors on each wheel for ABS...

I have been looking for the VSS on my tranny and don't know if I found it. What exactly does it look like?

I really think my problem is the cluster, I reset the trip meter and it started working yesterday, but now it's broke again.

Can someone post pics of where the hell the VSS is on our cars? I've looked for it like 12 times since mine started doing this exact same thing, and I can't find it... Someone was supposed to get me pics like 2 months ago and never did...

I would like to know if it's the same sensor on the V6 models. I know thats the one for the 4 cylinder cars as its the same sensor that was on my old prelude tranny.

I have changed these before on 4 cylinders, but cannot find it on my 3.0...

Hi All, I'm piggy-backing. My speedo is having the same issue. It was bouncing around and now it doesn't even think of flicking on. We changed the speed sensor, didn't work. Even changed the gauge cluster to see if that was bad, no change.
I want to sell her soon, but can't until I get that working. Any thoughts?
(side note, cruise control doesn't work when speedo isn't working, of course).
