1997 CL 2.2-Nightmare Misfire Problem.

Hey everyone. New to the site and hopefully you can help me out. My CL is trying to kill me with stress. I bought the car used with 254,000kms on it and seemed to run pretty well. Few issues but nothing out of the ordinary. Anyway long story short I have a misfire that just won't go away. Here is the tale.

Started with the engine light on. No noticible misfire but the damn light kept coming back, code PO302. Misfire on Cylinder 2. Well being that the car is so high miliage figured it would need a tune up. Replaced all 4 plugs. Drove for a day, P0302. Replaced all 4 plug wires, P0302. Replaced dizzy Rotor and Cap. P0302. Had a valve adjustment done. P0302. Compression has been tested and is good.

Now that the valves are all in spec the car actually misfires noticibly between 2-3k rpm. It will sputter and the cel flashes. Only under light throttle though. At idle it's fine or if your past 3k rpm or on the gas it doesn't miss. I have no idea what else it could be. Couple shops are saying the distributor or ECU but they haven't tested anything to be sure. Drives me nuts that a dealer will tell you to replace a $1k part without making sure it's actually broken.

The only known problem I have aside from the miss is that the exhaust has a leak in the downpipe before the o2 sensor. Can't see as how this would give it a cyl 2 misfire and not affect the other cyls but maybe.. Any suggestions? This is my daily driver and I put approx 500km a day on. I need it straightened out asap.

i have a 97 2.2 cl as well and had the same exact problem what you need to do is clean the egr and the egr ports in the intake maniifold there is a cover right under the fuel rail it looks like a mini valve cover remove that and there are 4 ports when you see it the problem will be obvious

^definitely a good start. These cars are notorious for egr ports/runners being clogged.
