intake resonator removal instructions for 3.0s
This is the repost of the original post by KikAzCL97.
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This is for anyone that wants to take out their air silencer and give their cl a little roar.
STEP 1
Locate your intake box and take the top half off and take out the air filter. The top is held by 4 8mm screws.
STEP 2
In the pic below you can see one of the 2 10mm bolts that you need to remove. The second bolt is down between the battery and the intake. You will need a long extension to get to it.
This is what it should look like once you remove the filter box.
STEP 3
Now turn your wheel all the way to the left and take out the bottom 2 screws that hold the plastic lining. Also remove as many of the plasitc clips that you need to to pull back the lining I only need to remove 3 of them.
STEP 4
After that pull back the lining and look straight thought where you pull it back from and you should be able to see a 10mm bolt. Remove it. Also if you look in where that u-shaped tube is there is a 10mm bolt there too.
Step 5
Once those are removed wiggle the whole thing back and forth because there is a bolt towards the front but you dont have to remove it. the box snaps on to the bolt.
STEP 6
This part is up to you on how you take it out. I separtated the U-shape tube from the box at the bottom. Them took the box out from the fender well and then took the tube up through the engine compartment.
STEP 7
Put it back together

WARNING!!!sound can be addicting. The car sounds sexy after you take out the resonator, especially after the Vtec kicks in. You'll find yourself flooring the pedal more often so you can hear the air gushing to the engine. This was the very first mod i did to my car ahah. Prolly the best thing you can do to upgrade your car's sound for FREE.
The engine can perform and little better and use less gas as it is sucking in more air while using less effort. A K&N air filter should keep all the dirt out of the engine. In my point of view, this is like a cold air intake for a fraction of the cost.
Remember, doing this means u raise the risk of your engine Hydropumping, when it sucks water into the engine, which is all bad.

Yeah man I just took mine out and didn't really hear much of a difference... Let me tell you though, it was a bitch to get mine out. Turns out some of the screws holding the lining on in the wheel-well were stripped and i had to just rip the lining off. And it took a surprising amount of force to get the U-bend thing out from the hood, and to yank the box from the wheel-well. I'm still happy though as this is my first mod Thanks for the DIY!

i'm back, this time i got an extension for the ratchet and finally got the last bolt off, and just popped off the bottom, i had forgotten if the u shaped tube had to be removed or not so i just pulled it from the top, and i guess i'm lucky to read it had to be removed.
And it sounds amazing btw, real more muscle to the sound, and newbee is right its very addictive, i catch myself flooring the pedal at regular lights for no reason like all the time now, and it does seem like a super cheap cold air intake, but if you ever drive the car through a puddle high enough to reach that opening and end up flooding the engine then you would have probably messed something else up even with the resonator in.
Thanks a ton for the DIY!
oh and does it sound different with a KN air filter? as opposed to the stock big white one?

when i did it me and my friend just took the whole wheel off it made it mad easy to do. and after 15 minutes of twisting and pulling to get the stuff out neatly i gave up and just ripped it all out. the hardest part was trying to separate the y-tube from the box that rubber seal is really tight

Drifting
I just unclipped the bottom most cover jacked the car up and dropped it directly down. I was having trouble getting the wheel well clips loose, so I just went this route. Definitely had to jack the car though, that box is rather large.

I tried this last week and almost got into a big accident. I took off the front wheel on drivers side and jacked the car up. removal of the clips was hard and I ended up breaking 3 out of 4 clips which requires removal to ease the resonator removal process. I had to buy clips on ebay and bought the bumper clips instead of fender clips but I might need it one day so its all good (correct hole dia is 8mm unlike 10mm for bumper). So, once you get enough clearance to see the resonator, remove the visible bolt and i suggest you loosen the not visible one by locating the bolt using ur hands and using a extended ratchet to turn it once or twice. I yanked and yanked and I was so close to getting it off, and all of a sudden the car fell of the jack! I got scared, im lucky i did not get hurt but I was so pissed to see my cl's rotor on the pavement. There is a trick here, sometimes when you yank it, it may seem like it is stuck but the secret is to look inside the hood and you will find that the resonator needs a little push down away from the hole it gets caught in to. Car is fine, no underside damage, and best part, I was able to install an ebay CAI with K&N FILTER (RE 0930) + injen hydroshield (to repel h20). I love the sound, I now get 14 miles per gallon from 18 mpg all city driving due to non stop throttling and it could also be because of the added 19" rims (racing hart cr). Noticed an inc in HP so that is all that matters.

Planning to do this soon, but just want to know some caution warnings. Aside from the increase warnings of Hydroplaning, anything else I should look out on? If the original poster is still around, is there any other possible way to get more pictures on where to screw and what not? I wanna try not breaking anything. Lol.

I still need some pictures, because I don't know exactly where that Resonator is sitting. Someone told me just to take off the plastic lining, save me some time. This is gonna be the second mod if i do this.

I guess...just the only problem is, I don't really know what the resonator looks like. Just wanted to make sure I'm pulling out the right thing. Lol.

Dude, it's not that bad. You just jack up the right front side, take the wheel off and remove the clips (you'll probably break them) Then there's i think 2 or 3 bolts behind the bumper holding the lower resonator in. I would get some new clips from honda before attempting so that you can reinstall the fender liner with new clips.

Success! Was about to remove the resonator without even jacking up the car (Although the bolts were a bitch to get to) No clips broke, and the car sounds louder when V-tec kicks it. Wow guess the rumors were true, the car sounds super super sexy. LOL.

I was thinking of getting an CAI instead..
I guess I count this as a prep. for when I do get a CAI. I'm guess your gonna have to take out the resonator some day...right?
Note: I am finding myself gassing alot...although just afraid that I'm wasting more gas. LOL.

Totally worthwhile!!
It took me about an hour and a half after I had all the right tools.
Very painful hour and a half. 9/10 of the little black clips you attempt to remove WILL break.
Put in my new K&N filter upon reinstalling the air intake.
VERY addicting sound.
I can start to hear a little around 3000 rpm.
At 4000 the first whooshing wave comes in.
And at about 4500 when vtec engages.... beautiful-- sounds like a tornado under the hood.
I have found myself flooring it between stoplights just to hear that sound.
Great mod--frustrating and somewhat impossible to do correctly without breaking anything, but definitely worthwhile
