Installed slightly bigger battery and removed plastic case to compensate! Dangerous?

As the description says, my battery was bad and a friend at a junkyard gave me a mint used one for $20. It was slightly bigger and to fit it I had to remove the plastic insert that the battery usually sits in. It fits in the bottom pan perfect and I still have the tie-down over the top to secure it, just not the plastic shield. I'm assuming this shield was for heat protection, but the batter is pretty isolated. Btw it's a 97 3.0. Thanks guys!

P.S. This new battery fixed my locking/unlocking mechanism which would lock/unlock about 9 times everytime I locked/unlocked the car.Now my chirp is louder and it only goes once!

You'll be fine, as long as the tie down is in place and the battery doesn't move, you're set. I switched mine to a second gen battery box, but it's more for cosmetics than anything, it does help protect from water and such, but I don't think car batteries have much issue with heat, I've seen plenty of bats sitting uncovered and never seen issues with that. My 4Runner's battery isn't covered, and it's fine

I've gone from an optima red top and now with an oversized heavy duty regular lead-cell battery made for GM vehicles. Never once used the battery tie down bars. Just put them in the trey and secured the battery posts. Never had an issue...but I can't say I would suggest it.

my old battery wasn't ever tied down and my car doesn't have the battery box that covers it either. When I changed to the yellow top optima I went ahead and ordered the tie down bolts and locked it down but still doesn't have the cover going around it
