Worried about your car?
I have been coming to this site for about a week now. Not a long time at all. However, in that short period of time, I have seen countless comments from people that seem to be having the same problem with the same part or system, on the same type of car. And considering that this board is just a small percentage of CL owners, we can safely assume that there are may other CL owners out there having the same problems that we are, who for whatever reason do not access this site. So what to do about it? We have at our disposal, a powerful tool. This board allows a large number of people to come together and discuss various topics. Having this ability and not using it to our advantage as consumers is a serious waste. I would be willing to bet that 85 percent of the people here having a 97 CL 2.2 like myself have had problems with the SRS light, or with the window rolling up/down slowly or not at all, or, as we all know, the transmission grinding and jerking. And most have probably waited like myself for Acura to issue a recall that sadly, never happened. I propose that we make every effort to contact the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration and let them know what is going on. I have seen complaints on the nthsa.org site about the 97 CL which were filed as recently as May of this year so it's never too late. We all spend a lot of money on these cars and should at the very least expect a safe, functional vehicle. Here is a link to the nhtsa complaint form. Thanks

I'm sorry, but this board is not a representative sample of CL owners. It is actually very biased and full of people that love to pick apart every problem and bitch about it much more than your average 30 year old CL owner. Even the transmission problem, which seemed so rampant, impacted only 2% of CLs owners. The only thing this car has wrong with it, besides a weak and poorly built auto transmission (which is not as bad as the 2gen CL 5 speed auto, which has much more failures), is the weak ass window regulators that break and cause your window not to come up, but they are covered by most warranties.

Good idea but it really may not go anywhere unless there is a safety issue. A crappy running car or a cheap car doesn't mean it should be pulled from the streets. Look at all the Neons and Kia's around!
They only recall when it's an issue of blatant safety and danger to driver and occupant. So... If the window doesn't roll up or breaks easily they won't recall the vehicle.
That's just the way it is...

I agree about the window. Sure it's more of an annoyance than a hazard. But, the SRS feature wasn't some free add on that Acura decided to throw in for free. It was bought an paid for by the consumer and as such should work. And as for the transmission, I wouldn't get so upset about it if they would at least come up with a replacement that worked. I'd even pay for it. As it is, many people on here are on their third or fourth transmission which indicates low quality even in the replacement units. And that is the issue that should be addressed.

About the SRS thing, I have never heard of any problems with it.

Yeah but if you have a 97 2.2 and you are heading on your way to the beach and your wheel just falls off, due to a ball joint recall. I would say that is very unsafe, at least I wasn't driving fast or on a highway.

What is worse is having a part go out, causing unsafe conditions, and then finding out that there are hundreds or even thousands of cases of the same faulty part, but Acura will not acknowledge it as a problem until the NHTSA gets involved. The NHTSA is not going to call us and ask us how our cars are doing. We have to let them know that out parts fall off, our circuts short and so on. Make Acura acknowledge the fact that thousands upon thousands of there cars are having the same problems and see what they plan to do about it. And for AtlCL, I'm glad you don't have the problems that others have had. And indeed you are in the majority, however, I would like to know that the Airbag is going to work if something happens, or that my wheel is going to stay on the car. In some cases, Acura built a shoddy product and should be held accountable.

about the transmission....i see that many of you downshift when racing from a roll....downshifting like that with auto would hurt the transmission right?? so i was wondering if the transmission problem is partly our fault.....correct me if im wrong...

I haven't heard of an actual Ball joint Recall. Did you get something in the mail?
Glad you are OK from that incident.
I'd like to hear more because i have a 2.2
What's the official word on a recall?

Here is some info on the Ball Joint Recall check it out. Also do a search on lower ball joint, ball joint, squeaking, metallic grinding...etc
When I go home tonight I will check if I got anything from Acura in the mail about the recall. It might not have affected every 2.2.
