Woo Hoo! HID's going in

So I am at my buddies shop (he does air ride suspensions, one of the best in the Dallas area), helping him with his computers and networking, etc, etc. His slow ass computers keep me there all afternoon, but no worries, see I had my laptop with me so I was working my job too.

Anyway, for all my hard work he hands me an 8000k Xenon HID kit. Ballasts, starters, and two 9005 bulbs. All plug and play. Just got to tidy the wires, mount the ballasts and starters and fire em up. I through them in when I got home just to see the difference....holy shit....

You can talk all you want about the blue fake HID's, but man this is sweet! I had my wifes xTerra headlights on, one 100W fake HID, and a real HID going and there was no comparision.

Question for you HID experts. I noticed that turning on the HID, it almost looks like a flash when it starts up, then it takes 5-8 seconds to get to it's brightest setting and the starter/ballast to stop buzzing. Is that normal HID start up?

Chris: that is normal for HID, the flash is the ignitor, igniting the bulb

did you take any pics of the 9005 hid yet? what kind of bulbs?

are you using that in the 9006 to 9005 conversion?

Congrats!

Are the 9005s much brighter than the 9006s?

How long does everyones kti take to fire up? (Also, what ballasts do you have).

My Hellas have the bulb full on within two seconds.

Rick, the 9005 should be the same brightness as the 9006 base (same bulb). It's the reflector that makes the difference. He should be able to put that kit in the low beams with no prob. The only difference (besides wattage) btwn a 9005 and a 9006 is the tabs on the inside of the electrical connector.

Yay join the 8000K Club!! Ya mine like like 5-10 sec to get to full intensity and sometimes they blink a couple times.

btw this is my boy's car with the same kit as mine(his pic looks cooler)

I think 8000k hid's are the fukin shit right now even if there not as BRIGHT and VISIBILITY isnt as good as the 4000,5000,6000 the COLOR makez up for it anyday!!

My mistake, they are the 9006's. They fit perfectly in the lows. I had 9005s in low and highs using the 4200k fake hids to get a brighter low beam.

I am going to go outside and finish installing them. I will see what brand ballasts they are...but hell, I don't care...they were free

Yeah, I would have never bought em.

That vid is exactly how mine fire up. I guess it really only takes 2-3 secs.

well that sucked....

After pluging both sets in, one after another, on the same side to verify they worked ok, I went through the lengthy installation on the drivers side. Due to all the factory air intake , I needed to pull all of it out to get to a good spot to mount the ballast and starter.

Well, after all that, fired them up, to find mismatched bulbs. One was purplish/blue (I am guessing the right 8000k bulb), and the other was a more pure white. I looked closer to find the p/n's were all jacked. THe bulbs had different p/n's, both ballasts were different p/n's, but the starters had matching p/n's. I swaped the bulbs only, to see what was causing the color variation, and it was the bulbs themselves (the color followed the bulb). THe kit seems to be very "generic" There is no manufacturer listed on them. They look like these:

I am assuming they are just cheap HIDs.

Regardless, the fact that all the p/n's were mismatched, doesn't sit well. I am going to take the kit back over to him, and tell him thanks for the thought....

IF he hands me another kit that matches...great. If not, :whocares: It's cool and all, and for a freebie, it was well worth it. But if he doesn't have another to give away, it won't hurt my feelings. I'll just take somethign else

I can't do that knowing the bulbs are mismatched. My ethical side would give me heartburn.
