windshield wipers question

ok guys, i've noticed that a lot of cars including our cl have this big weird looking shape thing on our windshield wipers. Its only on the one on the driver's side. What is that? whats the purpose of it?

i mean, it doesnt hit the glass, so it definitely isnt wiping water....im thinking it's some sort of guard..

Its too help prevent the wiper from lifting off the glass while on the highway. Provides downforce on the wiper keeping it snug to the glass, adds weight and extends the life of the motor.
.... At least thats what I think.

It's for downforce to keep the wiper on the windshield. I think it's actually called a spoiler, but don't get any ideas on putting a huge multi-platform wing on it.

Flat black paint... Clean it, paint it.

Dont need much prep cause the surface is already rough, so it will hold the paint.

Crayola paint ftw. I'm repainting mine with 1200 deg ceramic gloss black, have some left over from another project

Why is it only on the driver side?

I never knew what it was for either. I kind of thought that maybe it was to deflect water. I know that's stupid. Like when the wiper crosses the windshield and the wind blows water back onto the glass as the wiper comes down it. I thought maybe that piece kept the water from getting back on the windshield. HAHA!

My windshield wipers are fading to aluminum too. How do I take those suckers off? I took off the little 14mm bolts off and used brute force and tried prying it off with a screw driver and it wont budge. Is there something else I have to take off??
btw, I got Krylon primer and Krylon high temp flat black paint.

I repainted mine a while ago, but the paint is starting to chip of already. SHould of used primer . Once you take of the nuts, all you have to do is flip the wiper blades up, then they come off super easy. Also when you put them back on make sure you tighten the nuts while the wipers are flipped up, so they are tight. Otherwise your wipers may not work. Also make sure you place the wiper to its original position, otherwise it will hit the plastic molding piece side of the windshield, or not go far enough over.

Ahh, ok. Thanks! I was worried that I had to disconnect some part of the motor or something. Didn't want to break anything off. I finally got them off with ALOT of force and leverage. About to start sanding/primering/painting after Smallville/Lost/Spurs basketball game.

Yeah, I didn't want to start a new thread on just taking off the windshield wipers when this one existed so I wouldn't get yelled at for not searching.. The bolts were actually 14mm and the screw things were rusted really bad. CLR took care of that. What is that blueish primer you use blackack? I noticed you use it for most of your painting projects. Any good? My guess is that it would be better than the white Krylon primer I use. How did the black gloss turn out versus the flat black that it came with?

hurray for redundancy, ive got the spoiler on the arm, and built into my blades, how cool, plenty of great downforce, but when im moving fast enough for them to be taking effect, either im dreaming because TX drivers are going 2 MPH and slowing me down, or its an empty roadway and im enjoying the joys of RainX, I swear anyone that rides in my car on a rainy day is scared when I dont turn on the wipers
