Why water pump with timing belt

Why water pump with timing belt

Just got my timing belt changed today (99 2.3 - not by an Acura dealer) and I feel like a retard now because it seems like nobody can say "timing belt" without "water pump" in the same sentence.

What's the deal, do water pumps break a lot? Are they cheap? Or is it just because it's a rank job so you might as well do the water pump when you're there?

So anyway I just paid roughly $200 Canadian in labour for the timing belt should I pay it again for the water pump right now do you think or what?

Also as a side note the engine seems a little louder and more vibratey at about 2500 rpm than before. I've only owned the car for like a week though so I don't know if before or after is normal. I did a search and it seems like the after-louder thing is a good thing but couldn't really find anything conclusive.

the reason the water pump is usually replaced with the timing belt is due to the fact that the water pump is kind of behind the timing belt so as long as your in there you might as well get them both done save you time and money as opposed to if you r pump goes out later on down the line. as far as the louder part of your engine

I dunno, I think it would be more retarded to pay labor for a t-belt and then have to pay that same labor again when your water pump goes out 3K after you did your t-belt. Most honda dealers only charge you for the part if they do the water pump with the t-belt and the majority quote you the price that includes your waterpump

I agree. Replace both and pay for the labor once...not twice. Timing belt and water pump both have about the same life expectancy anyway.

$200 in labour is a good deal.. Did you get both balance shaft belts done or just the timing belt? Canadian Tire quoted me 4 hours of labour at $96 an hour (Calgary has bad inflation), and $100 more for the parts than the next place I asked, needless to say I have no intention of going back to Crappy Tire.

The Chilton book says timing belt must be removed to remove the water pump.. I don't know why one has to go through that and why you can't just remove the water pump by disconnecting the accessory drive belt like the last, crappy GM car I had. There's something else I liked about that Chevy, it had a timing chain that never required service.

I love having a friend that's a Master Technician.

He did my timing belt, all other belts, and water pump for $250US total.
