Why are local tuner shops soooo expensive?
I went into the local tuner shop, Evolution, in Chantilly, VA. To get a price quote for a CAI. They only quoted prices for Injen and AEM at $220.
Obviously we all know you can get them online for alot less, and even with shipping costs, you'll still save $$$ because if you get it in a store, you'll have to pay sales tax. They must know that we know....so what's the deal? Just because I walk into a store and they can order it for me...I'll decide to waste up to $30 for no reason?

Yeah they really do charge too much. Even my friend who owns an import shop charges alot. He does most installs and shit for free for me though.
He said the reason that they can't get their prices as low as ebay and alot of online distibutors, is because they don't order shit in bulk like the online companies do. They order like 2 intakes, where as the online companies order like 200, so their cost ends up cheaper meaning they can sell it cheaper and still make a good profit.

Haven't you noticed you pretty much get everything online cheaper. Why would tuner shops be any different. And you also have to consider you live on the wrong coast, out here there is so much competition in each city between shops that prices are usually cheaper. ON the east coast there is usually one shop for every couple cities.
also as sodark said, most independent shops don't have a lot of inventory. So the online dealers just have boxes of everything laying around and get better prices.

Yeah, markup on stereo equipment has the highest markup value of almost anything else, excluding stupid stuff like cabling, and assorted small items.

I think it all depends on how reputable the shop is. If it has been around for a while and has a large inventory then i might be inclined to pay the some more money. Especially for more technical stuff. I mean who wants to fuck up an install and have no one to turn to anyway.

Rent and utilities I don't think is a part of mark-up. Compared to online retailers...they have rent and utilities also. I also imagine the staff would have to be bigger also to have someone handle the orders and shipping it out. I mean, online retailers are regular stores also.
