What Would You Get?

Hey all,

I looking to buy a new car to do some modding and audio work on and I really like the 1st/2nd gen CL series. I currently have an ’06 TL (that my wife won’t let me modd ).

I’m looking for some suggestions on what YOU would buy if you where in my boat. As I am just starting to learn about these vehicles what would I need to know, look for, stay away from and what mileage is reasonable to buy at. Most of the car I have looked at already in “stock” form are mint condition in/out but have 100K plus miles.

Any help would be great.

2003 6spd CL if you can find one / afford it. Otherwise, go for a 97-99 1st gen 2.2 5 speed manual CL.

They're sluggish, but they're fun.

Average life expectancy ranges depending on climate, terrain, the driver, maintanance, etc...

Most well kept Honda/Acura products will run over 300,000 miles. 100,000 is certainly broken in, but also certainly not broken. Just make sure to check for recall services and transmission services. It is very important that you check out any first generation CL's transmission if it is an automatic. If the previous owner was hard on it and didn't maintain it, you might run into trouble.

Don't pay more than $7,000 for it with that many miles.

Good luck.

If you're looking for a luxury car that you can do some modding to, the cl is great. If you want to go all out and make it all performance, buy a 90-93 or 94-97 accord. They still have alot of aftermarket support but are not played out like civics or integras. For the amount of a 1st gen cl, you could buy an h22 swapped accord with some change or buy a stock one and do the swap yourself and use the extra cash to mod it more.

You definetly shouldnt get a 4 cyl in automatic! Get a 2.x manual and you will be set, although aftermarket parts are hard to get. Many aftermarket parts such as head/tail lights don't exist. A couple body kits exist but look like shit.

it for real all comes to what kind of modding you want, if you want more engine mods like cold airs, and springs and all that get a manual trans car like the ones named above with low to average miles look for service records and all that, the cl is a great car especially the 2g ones and if yu want more audio and visual stuff try for a 2g tl or maxima or some nice auto tranny relax kind of car

What all do you plan on doing with it? If you want something easy to mod look into any accord, 240's, wrx, preludes, s2k's.... The list can go on. CL's are a great base because they really are just an accord, but more unique.. To say the least. I would take a CL-S 6 Speed anyday of the week though.
