what do you guys think....
I have a 98 3.0 cl and was wondering if anyone has tried to build a custom turbo for our car and what all should I do to the motor to help it hold the HP increase other than the tranny needing to be beafed up. I have a guy that does machine work and has machined his whole WRX to push out over 700 wheel HP, that said he will do the piping and whatever I needed for the motor (port and polish heads, piston work, u name it he said he can do it) What all will I have to do for this to work????
Thanks,
John

u need ALOT. its bout 1800 for a tt pipe setup, not including turbo's bov, comp, intercooler, etc. and 1300 for a single setup pipes only. i went to dynamic motors in tampa and they told me if i walk in with my cl, a single setup would get me around 350-400 hp, and it would cost round 5g's and a tt setup would push round 700hp and it would cost 8g's. but those were numbers with everything done to the engine to make it hold that much power, and all the parts and labor. however the tranny is a totally different story.

worst statement ever....
it depends on what turbo you would use as to what kinda psi would be safe, obviously a t25 at 10psi isnt flowing as much air as say a 50trim turbo at 10psi, ive owned a turboed civic (d16z6 w/ t25) and a currently own a 90 talon tsi awd w/ a big 16g and my beater cl, which i plan on doing a custom setup with as well (but its a 2.3, still researching what the motor could handle before i begin putting things together for it, my suggestion is research research research, then plan, and research some more, better safe than sorry

com'mon pimpin, before u go hatin on my statment, do the research. obviously the talon motor with steel pistons can take a big g, and ur civic with the t25 that only puts out a max of maybee 10 psi, can take it. but look at the compression ratio's, and displacment. 9.4:1 is alright for a v6. so maybee my numbers arent as exact as u might wanna see., but its definatly not the worst statment ever. and we are talkin bout the 3.0 and not the 2.3. so maybee your research should begin with what was on topic first.

10 psi from what? you people think im arguing that the motor cant handle 10psi, but you fail to realize that you still havent seen what kind of turbo this guy would be planning on using.....thats my point, not that the motor cant handle 10psi from certain turbos, im sure it could my z6 handled 13psi stock w/ the t25 on pump gas, the point is you cant go around giving a general statement like it will hold 10psi without knowing what kind of turbo the guys planning on using, b/c like i said obviously 10psi from a t25(which flows like 285cfms) is producing less cfms than 10psi from say the big 16g(which puts out like 450 cfms i think), so if you give a FI newb info like "it will hold 10psi" and he slaps a 60 trim on it and blows it through the roof, then the kid says well "they said it would hold 10psi" you have to be more specific to people who are obviously learning about FI, so now can you all see my point about that being a bad statement? a t25 that flows 2xxcfms does not produce the same power as a say a 16 g at 4xxcfms....if the psi your pushing is all that matters then why are there a million different kinds of turbos, differnt intake/exhaust combos?...and btw you have to atleast half way know what youre talking about before you start handing out FI advice
now to the topic at hand, if you want to turbo that motor and seriously turbo it, youre gonna obvioulsy have the exhaust part of it, that will either be a pre-fab or done by an yourself/exhaust shop, johnnyracecar.com sells some nice i/c's at a good price, the i/c piping some type of fuel management, im not sure of the compatability of hondata and cl's, im sure theres something out there for it, but you def dont want to use just a fmu, theyre more prone to not working, and have limited tuning capabilities (for example you can get like 8:1, 10:1, and 12:1 disks for them, which means for every 1psi it will raise the fuel pressure by 8, 10, or 12 psi) i also reccomend a afc controller, (which you cant use with a fmu) and bigger injectors, a walbro 255 intank pump, tranny i imagine would be ok for basic everyday driving and the occasional track day, im not sure on the strength of those trannies, you could upgrade the clutch, but without any serious racing i wouldnt touch the tranny, as far as the head goes, head work goes a long way, just your basic stuff, port, polish, etc, maybe some different hardware up there if youve got the money, and as far as the block goes i would reccomend sleeving it, and maybe a nicer set of rods/pistons

type S cams dont exist????? someone must have ripped me a new 1 when i bought them then. I didnt know the V2 was made outta PVC, guess it is true u do learn new things everyday.
I would never go TT, it would be really hard to create enough room in our engine bays for 2 turbos and all the piping.
