What car would you buy with $13,000? opinions please

My brother is ready to buy a car and wants to stay close to 13-14 grand. Of course I told him to buy a cl, but he wants a celica. personaly i hate them and think he would be better off spending a bit more and getting an rsx or prelude. what would you guys recomend? any suggestions gladly appreciated

thanks

That Rx-7 would be cool as hell. too bad the bid was at 12,000. And the Reserve has not been met. That sucks.
How about an older supra if you can find one?

They are builing a Lexus in SCC or Super Street this month. Doing a Supra engine swap...The whole thing is costing around $12K.

Is your brother younger? Is this his first car?

I would say prelude over all the other excessive answers these guys are giving assuming the answer to both those questions are YES.

A prelude is a quick reliable car. Repairs comes cheap if ever.

Used bimmers are EXPENSIVE to fix, I know I owned one. Used Lexus are relaible as hell too, true, but services and repairs again are EXPENSIVE.

Besides you cant get a Lexus in a manual

In Florida i would say get a carvette convertable ( i have one so am biased). Down there you can pick up a 91-91 vert for that price with reasonable miles. Then you will have some real perofrmance right outta the box and a timeless design. If you want more of a daily driver (although a well maintained C4 vette will pass for one) i would look at a used E class mercedes or something like that. I have seem nice ones up her for 14 grand.

Bah...Mustang? Corvette?

I disappeared from these forums for awhile, but this is worth a come back :p

I see so many 'stang five-point-slow's around my area and I've stomped a few when it came to racing.

Corvette's are fast as hell but I would never buy one because they COME like that and you don't have to do shit to it.

Personally, I'd say go for the prelude...I think they look totally sexy just stock on nice rims. Dunno why, but I don't like the looks of any preludes when they look "aftermarket".

the kind of car your brother can get is dictated by his age and insurance rate more than anything else.

the insurance score for a 95 BMW M3 is around 28, an RX7 is 24-26 and usually the high dollar cars are in the 23+ range. just to give you an idea, the acura is about a 15 on the same scale. to get into a sports/luxo car, especially for his first one is a very bad idea.

sarlscc23 : you can get the lexus in 5spd. some of the older ES300's were availabe in 5spd and the SC300's all the way to 97 are available in 5spd. however, finding one that doesnt have a ton of miles on it... or hasnt been wrecked is a challange.

p.s. an RX7 is not a car for the regular person who doesnt know anything about tuning.

I guess i should have given more info. Yes he is younger, just turned 18. Makes pretty good money, but spends it all in junk. so he figured that he would put about half down and borrow the other 6-7g's instead of blowing money away like crazy.

I dont really thing that he should get a luxo or a mad sports car cuz his insurance will go throught the roof. Plus, that dum ass has rear ended twice within four months. Both times it was rainy and he could not stop on time. BUT he drives like he is in an F1 car and follows people too close. thats why he rear ended twice in four months I told him to get a CL because they are pimp as fook and reliable as hell. but he is a hard headed teen like most of us were, so hes like "its my money ill buy what I want"

Sounds like he needs a Ford Festiva with power nothing and a shitty engine. And some driving lessons on top of that before he should be buying anything.

Id hate to see a nice prelude get jacked cause he doesnt know how to drive properly, specially in weather.

Badest car you can get for around 13k = late model formula or TA. I know the anti-american car people are gonna trash me, but formula's and transams (firebird in case some n00b doesn't know) are the straight illest cars. Fast, comfortable, look excellent, what more could you want?

Here's a suggestion. Take 2g's of the money he wants to put down and go to Skip Barbers driving school. Why blow the down payment on a car when he doesn't know how to drive?

Speaking as a person who has been rear ended twice, once by an 18 wheeler. I have little tolerance for people that don't know how to handle the vehicle they own.

Then get a Prelude or CL!

the funny thing is we live 10 min from Sebring. (home of the 12 hours of Sebring lemans race. so the famous Panoz racing school is RIGHT there. they usually take the panoz gt cars and show them off at carreer fairs and such. I have sat and shifted throught the gears. btw: throws are virtually nonexistant and the clutch is extremely hard. I felt like hotwiring it and taking off

forget about your brother for a minute and let me just say again that in florida for 13 G's you can get a sweet Corvette. Whoever complained earlier in the thread that they come fast as hell is an idiot. WHAT THE HELL IS WRONG WITH THAT. If your respnse is that you enjoy modding the car believe me you can mod a Chevrolet 350 engine as much as youd like. There are people running 9's in street legal C4's. I don't car for american cars in general at all just vettes. You can buy (i know cause i did) a mint condition 91-94 Corvette Convertable in that price range. Nothing else is going to come close in looks, performance or long term resale value. I bought my 91 Corvette convertable a little over a year ago in showroom shape for 13,500 and i have had offers from people to buy it for more than that. Not to mention it already had a stainless borla catback system, brand new Eagle GS-C tires and chromes wheels and door handles. I can't go anywhere without people drooling out of their windows or chicks having to change their panties. Anyway enough said, get a vette with that scratch. It's a no brainer.

Now how about my dilemma, i am thinking of selling my vette to get a 91-93 NSX. There are a few for sale locally in the low to mid 20's i love my vette though i dont know but for 13 grand buy a damn corvette and be done with it.

yeah after my taurus. . . . i'm never getting a ford again. my friend works at a ford dealer ship. they don't really sell any cars there. . . so how do they stay in business? their service center is always full.

yeah my parents and i have owned american cars until my cl. we've had mercury sable, chrysler town and country, 2 plymonth voyagers, 2 dodge caravans, 3 tauruses,a dodge wagon, a buick, a mustang. . . . .they broke down so much, we had to have a fourth back up car so that if those crappy cars broke, we would have a spare. i swear! AAA knew me by name! yeah. . . american cars may be fast, but they are put together so badly that they might not even last 100,000 miles. my cl has 101,000 and it's still going strong.

i hate american cars

ford=fix or repair daily. . . . . yeah that's pretty much true.

I only kind of American car I would ever own is a brand spanking new one. At least I'll know it will run for a few years. No way would I ever get a used one. I would probably get a truck...for some reason trucks seem to last longer than cars. And no way would I ever ever get a Mustang, Corvette, Camaro....they drive themselves loose a couple of years.

BMW....maybe, depending on how old it is and where it was made. I would never get one that was made in the US...same quality as American cars. Make sure it was made in Germany. Same for any German cars like Audi, Mercedes, BMW. Ones made here in the US are crap. Since Mercedes merged with Dimler-Crysler, their quality had gone to shit. Germans are much more stringent with their craftsmanship. Their reputation is on the line because in Europe, most families have only one car.
