weird idle?

I was wondering how come when i start my car it idle's from anywhere from 1.5-2k rpm and stays at that, but when i go in reverse or d3/d4 it goes back to a lil under 1k rpm? Is this normal?

is the car warmed up when it is running 1.5-2?

when you put it into gear the tranny puts a small load on the engine. that would cause it to decrease the RPMs. I dont have an auto, i just remember that from other cars.

Yeah, if your car is not warmed up it will usually rev a little higher than normal. It slowly decends as the car's temp needle climbs to normal temp. But like you said if you drop it into d3/d4 it goes to the normal rev limit. My car does this too but only when the engine is cold.

That happens to me and I have a five speed, I believe it is just because the car has been turned of all night. I don't know if it ghas anything to do with the actually temperature outside.

The temp out side wouldn't matter. The engine runs at least 100 degrees warmer than any weather you will run into. I have auto and the same thing happens to me. It isn't a problem, your engine is just warming up. Wanna test it out??? Dive your car around for awhile and make note where your engine temp gauge sits durring normal idle at a stop light or something. Then next time u start the engine in the morning do not put it into gear until the engine temp gauge is at that spot. Your rpms should be lower at the point neway! Problem fixed!
