Week of Hell with a 97 3.0L

This was suppose to be a simple project for my fiance thats going to grad school in the fall. I wanted to get the car good to go for 3 years so that she wouldn't have any worries about the car. The initial projoect was to do a tune-up and two lower balljoints... 4 days later here I am! Finally done!

The tune-up was this:
Valve Adjustment (did the waterpump and timing belt last month **PAIN**)
Dizzy Cap & Rotor
Plugs & Wiring
Fuel Filter
PCV

Suspension work was this:
4 Balljoint (2 upper/2lower)
2 Rotors (Front)
Pads
1 Wheelbearing

You can see that my days worth of work just went to sh*t. I got in there to do the balljoints noticed the rotors were done, broke a upper balljoint so said screw it do both, then got the hub out to goto the dealership to press out the rotors and noticed the wheelbearing was bad.

Here's some pics. Needless to say the car runs like a dream now lol... 117k miles!

Nice, I got most of my suspension replaced 3~ weeks ago. New controls arms, wheel bearings, trailing arms, bushings all around. It drives like it's brand new(which it kind of is).

Anyway you're a bad ass for doing that for your girl so props.

I haven't even taken a look at the rear but I'd almost rather not.. I'll wait a month before I do.

Sounds like you had some fun of your own with all those parts needing replacement.

I am wanting to replace my upper control arm ball joint. Did you replace the whole control arm or just the ball joint and if just the ball joint please help?

i bought the whole control arm with all 3 brand new oem ball joints and the lower ball joint. but now i need to replace the front upper ball joint to a camberkit ball joint because i can barely drive my car due to the massive incline my wheels took without the camber kit due to the drop. so if your car is stock then your fine but if your dropped i recomened you get your prices first.

UPDATES:
Well... Well...

This weekend my fiance return from pharmacy school reporting of a weird wobbling feel on the highway. I get the car back and I find that the rear wheel is hanging up. So I rip the calipers off and find out that one pin on each side of the car was seized completely. I had to torch them out, relube them, dremel out the slide holes and order new boots/bushing for the calipers.

Below: You can see how one pin was seized and it caused the pad to wear down at a slant. There was almost 100% pad on the unseized side and about 25% on the seized side. Caused the rotor to warp as well. As I started to take off the rotors, one for the screws was seized as well causing me to cut it out and smooth the bolt flush with the hub assembly. PAIN IN THE ASS BRAKE SYSTEM ON THESE F'N CARS!

I decided while I was waiting for the brake stuff to come in I would tackle some of the body work. It was a debate at first since it looked as though it was just starting to become an issue. Then when I got in there... surprise! it had been in an accident and they bondo'd the shit out of the fender and it was all coming off. and what metal was there was rusting.

doesn't match, but it's better.

Yeah these cars are notorious for the calipers seizing, happens to lots of us.

Nice work on the rust and fiberglassing, you should get a color matched can and make it look complete. Thanks for the update

You should have had a paint shop mix you up a spray bomb with the color code on your door jam and get an almost exact match. Never the less, it looks ALOT better than what it did. Why did you choose the long process of fiberglassing over of Bondo? More durable?

Hmm.. I hope you took out all the rust before you started to fiberglass that or it'd be inevitable that the rust will come back. My car rusted in the exact same spot on one side and my other side has some some bubbles showing. I think i'm gonna just cut it out though and reweld in new metal. I done it with my integra but it's so much work.

You're right, the correct way of doing it would have been that. This car is my fiance's and she's away at pharmacy school for the next 3 years. Basically, the car has to last that long. That is and was my goal of this project. I know a lot of people will not like that statement since it means I will be getting rid of the car at the end of those 3 years.

The process was fiberglass, then short strand fiberglass bondo (for strength), then bondo, primer, then paint, then clear coat. They didn't have the right paint because the code had been discontinued. I could have spent more money to get them to mix the paint but it was an expense that didn't need to be made. The whole job cost me 75$ versus 600$ from a shop that would cut and weld in a new piece.

Will it come back through? probably, but the goal was to get the car to pass inspection since it was on the boarder this time by.

Ahh, just to pass inspection. You could always buy your own welder for $600 lol.
