Want to crush a Bimmer!!!

My buddy has a '02 BMW 325ci which is stock 184hp. He has had some tuning done to it but no mods. I know I am a ways away from beating his ass in a drag but thats my ultimate goal... for now. What do you all reccommed as a first mod to my 98 CL to get most HP increase for the $$$.

Who was it that said most first gen owners are broke... well me too. I was thinking along the lines of CAI, hearders, exhaust. Which will make the best bang for the buck.

Seeing as you're handicapped 34hp from the start, there's not a whole lot you can do short of spraying like Dust said. A good start would be to get a CAI.

CAI = several HP ($150)

-plus-

Headers = several more HP ($150)

-plus-

Exhaust = several more HP ($250)

= 20 HP max ($550)

BUT for the same cost as above:

N2O = 50 to 75 HP [My 1st N2O kit (including bottle warmer, pressure gauge and purge kit) was $500 bought used from eBay.]

Just a thought.

BTW: I heading out right now. I hope a 323, 325, 328, 330, 525, 528, 530, or even a 540 rolls up beside me!

with bolt-ons you cant beat him.

besides, the inline 6's are much better on the highway than our cars. i raced my friends 328ci when i had I/H/E/short shifter and i couldnt beat him eventho he gave me a car ahead.

And the 3 series weigh a couple hundred more pounds than a 2.3 on top of it.

I just took out a 328 on I-270 in Gaithersburg, on my way to get a nitrous refill!

N20 would seem like the right choice should I be on a track a lot but realistically I wont be. I cant really see myself using N2O around my streets, most of my racing will probably have lots of accelleration and deceleration making me think C/H/E would be a better start, but I could be wrong, thats what you are all for, letting me know that And wouldnt the stock exhaust be a bottle neck for a nitrous system?

That 328 has 192 HP stock compared to 325 which has 184 HP so I might have a closer chance with that.

Now after then mods were made, if the ECU was tuned to optimise these mods what could the resulting HP be?

No.

Well, instead of 75 HP, you may only get 65 HP. Still double or triple what you would get from i/h/e.

You can "reset" the stock ECU to adapt to the mods. Otherwise you'd need to get a custom made ECU (where; I don't know) or get a stand-alone engine management unit.

I have to agree w/ dust. My goal a while back was to beat this black prelude (which i believe was 200hp stock). I stuck a CAI on there, and I still lost by a bit. Keep in mind I have a 3.0. Anyway, I decided to put a 75 shot (dry) on my ride, purchased from a fellow A-CL member. The next time I rode againt the 'lude, I smoked him in a most ridiculous manner.

Even if you won't be bringing your ride to the track, N2O is simply the cheapest HP you can buy. You can spend a good amount of money on I/H/E/P, and still not match the output of a relatively cheap dry nitrous system. The advantage of the I/H/E/P path is that, of course, that power is on all the time.

If you're just trying to beat someone, get yourself some fawkin nitrous.

I assume the Prelude was a manual right? You should have taken an auto.

correct, it was a manual, and had intake & exhaust mods.

f0de - welcome back.

rmh3093 - if you want to crush a Bimmer, you might as well buy a new car. Nitrous is great, but if you want something really fast you've got the wrong car. I love my CL, but its not gonna win too many races.

again the CL can be fast, but for most its a situation where your going to spend so much money most are better off getting new cars. Those who can spend the money to mod a CL to a good extent and make it quick are usually rich enough to do things like that. Not me though...my cl is all show, no go until i get my mustang (don't bother flaming i see it coming already) next spring.

Hell, I won't flame you for buying a Mustang. My neighbor has an SVT convertible w/ nitrous and a bunch of other mods. The thing flies.

Thanks man. Lots of people on here are just straight american car haters. I can understand that too. And most of the things they hate are absolutly right (shitty gas mileage, don't go as many miles, etc etc). But there is nothing like the feel of a big ass V8 in front of ya and a deep exhaust and rear wheel drive. The only way to get all that on an import is by spending 60,000 dollars for some crazy merc or something. I'm a muscle car guy all the way, but since i need my car to be HALFWAY reliable, i'm gonna buy a new 98 yellow mustang GT with black leather, black convertible, a little bit of decal work on the hood (looks almost like boss decaling in black, but it doesn't say boss [since those were never made on the most recent mustangs {95 up}]).
