VTEC... what?
Hey,
after I used the search engine on this forum, I didn't really get an answer to my question.
I've been reading about VTEC technology for a while now, but I never got a clear description of how the whole thing operates.
Also, I've heard many times people talking about their "VTEC's kicking in"... i think I've never really felt a VTEC here: I always thought the 2.3VTEC on my 99CL was always kind of sluggish! lol
Well, thanks for the info. and documentation.

its cuz we basically dont really HAVE vtec.
you can look at it like we have HALF vtec, cuz we only have SOHC, only on the intake side.
on DOHC you have the full effect, on the intake and exhaust side.
tried breaking it down in layman terms, i may have come out sounding retarded. lol

lol...
you're trying to explain things like I'm half retard.
You really got me even more confused.... as much as I know, VTEC is a technology, not a verb, a living creature in our engines...
Anyways, I did get some feedback after an hour of research on the forum.
It's simply a Valve Timing mechanism that enhances explosion using an advanced camshaft-computerized mechanism. The explosions get more efficient at higher RPMs with Honda's technology: motor explosion is enhanced because of better combustion and vavle timing. It happens that our engines do it best only above a certain ceiling...
Some forumers have posted videos driving their cars driving, and our friends with 2nd Gen Cl's seems to have an audible boost after 4500rpm. I really never felt anything in my CL, if not a sluggish acceleration!
On the same line, will a CAI really change things, or most of you guys have one for the hell of it and making the underhood look nice, like a girl wearing dentelle lingerie instead of plain "hollister" style bras and boy shorts??
Thnx for the feedback.
Oh, and say hi to VTEC for me please. I miss him

i dunno about anyone else, but when i floor it and get up to about 5800RPM (almost redline), VTEC kicks in somewhere and it sounds awesome, very deep rumble...my car's all stock...

vtec = Variable valve Timing and lift Electronic Control

I can notice it in my 5 speed, comes on at around 4500rpm. I was driving back from school when one of my friends blocked me in with his xterra, so I dropped it into 3rd gear 4500rpm and stomped on it when I got an opening. It got to 100 pretty fast.

edit: Nvm, it does engage @ 4500. The car pretty much stops making power at 5500

Here's a decent explanation of vtec for our SOHC hondas: http://www.leecao.com/honda/vtec/sohcvtec.html

It's noticeable on my 2nd gen cl type s with Intake and headers... Sounds Damn good.
IN A NUT SHELL.....Your cam gears have a lobe in them different than a non-vtec motor and when vtec engages (at what ever rpm that is) your cams with lift the valves in a way that will allow more air flow, fuel... etc. in to the motor causing you to hear that noise and can also give you noticeable power gains if tuned right!
Kinda confusing but if you do a lil googling you can figure it out.
