Valve Job

Valve Job
I have a 99 2.3 CL and the engine light kept coming on. I took it to the dealer and after their testing , they diagnosed a leak in the number 1 cylinder. A total valve job was recommended at a cost of $1600. Ouch! Is there an alternative? Second opinion Help! Has anyone had similar problems? Thanks

I think you're in the correct forum. Other poster probably didn't realize he had swapped forums.
If diagnosis was done correctly and head gasket is leaking, then cylinder head must be removed and the head gasket replaced. However, it is usually not necessary to do anything to the head but 1) check for cracks in head and 2) "shave" head flat to insure the head will seal correctly to the new gasket. The price of $1600 seems a little steep to me.
You may want to get a 2nd opinion on the problem and some quotes from good import repair shops. I think you can do better.
good luck

Same thing happened to me over a year ago. #1 cylinder low compression tested at a dealer. I just kept driving it and resetting the ecu every few days. I kept spraying too hoping the engine would blow but it never did. Been parked in my driveway since June, for some reason the bond is too strong and I just can't get rid of it. Holy crap I just realized I've had this car for 10 years.

If you want to keep the car, see if the head needs to be rebuilt then shave and new gasket it.
1600 is ridiculous.
You can get it rebuilt for 700 (in va anyway)

stealership is just settin u up front for 1600. its realy impossible to determine where compression leak is located. it may be : any valve, piston rings or even spark plug seat, who knows. where the hell did they get that quote from?

Acura 99 CL valve job
Just thought that I would keep everyone informed of the progress of my CL. I took it to another import/Honda/Acura garage and they found that it was mis firing in 3 out of the four cylinders. They have been in the business for a long time and have never seen a 2.3 Honda engine like this. Perhaps it wasn't driven on the highway? In any case their price was $600 less than the prvious quote. Their first guess was the head gasket. Thanks again for all your advice. Branch
