Valve adjustment and timing belt

Hello,
The car: 1997 CL 2.2 automatic with 85,000 miles.
When do you guys usually adjust the valves. Is it normal for a car to have the valves ticking after only 20,000 miles past since the initial adjustment? Also, are the timing belts known to snap or am I still safe? Lastly, are the automatic transmission problematic on the 4 cylinders or is this only when they are mated to the V6?
Thanks in advance.

the 2.2s always tic, but yeah i have mine done bout 20,oook ago and its needs it again. depends how hard u drive the car i guess. my car likes to be at 5500+ rpm.

yes the if th ebelt snaps on the I4 you will get some nasty engine damage. bent rods etc.

also the i4 trannys aren't as troubled as the v6s. i drop gears in my slowmatic all the time. works like the day i bought it. but then again we arent makin 200+ hp.

On the 3.0, you adjust them (or have the shop adjust them) only when they're noisy.

About this valve adjustment, My car is sounding like a sewing machine and is idleing extremely hard. Could the valves be the problem? It is still idleing between 690-710 which is normal but it feels extremely rough. I have never had them adjusted and I have about 53000 on it and have went though 1 bottle of N20. Any ideas on the hard idle. It idles hard weather I run rich, lean, or stoich so im stumped here.
