transmission drain plug magnet

Transmission drain plug, is it a good idea to cover the magnet with grease to make all the metal pieces stick better to the magnet. Or just clean the plug magnet and leave it dry?

Wipe her off and stick it back in. You really dont want any forigen materials in that transmission. ATF is a detergent and will break down most grease.

Thanks...Detergent huh.. did not know that.

Most mechanics usually put grease on the plugs magnet that i know. But your right it will get the fluid dirty.
So when i took my plug off found that the magnet had grease on it the factory didn't do it correct?
So my transmission was most likely drained sometime ago.
I have 100K on it, got it at 87K so the previous owner or dealer did it at 49K or just when i bought it.

I heard and read i need to drain and fill 3 to 4 times with 80km driven in between changes? My trans fluid drained about 3.5Litres put 3.0 litres back in, i was told when i bought the fluid at the acura dealer thats all i needed. Got a half litre of Honda trans fluid left from my Accord 1990 from years back, not the ZR type that Honda sells now is that okay to?

When you say there was grease on it... are you sure its just not sludge and buildup?
Yes, to do it properly you will need around 9 qts of Honda/Acura ATF (dealer or Ebay) and drain it once. Fill it back up with about 3 qts. Drive for a couple days. Repeat until you have done 3 or 4 times. For best results: Add Seafoam tranny treatment about 300 miles b4 your first drain and fill.

Sludge i don't think so, it was grey in color so i only remember in the past with my other car a mechanic greased the magnet plug. So i wiped all the grease off with a bit of metal shavings.

Yeah thats sludge not grease. Mine was the same way, its amazing the crap that the magnet picks up. In a normal transmission most of that would be stuck to the filter - but the rocket scientists at honda figured their trannys didnt need filters.

I've never heard of putting rease of the end of a plug before.
