Transmission difficulties

okay, i have a 98 2.3 5spd with 86,xxx miles. Recently, when i come out of 5th gear to a stop, and try to shift into first to get going again, it makes an aweful griding noise and wont go into gear. I end up shifting to 2nd then back to 1st and it does it fine. This doesnt happen everytime, but it is becoming more frequent. If anybody has had this same problem, knows whats wrong, or just has any suggestions in general, please repsond.

Hmm. I hear that same grinding nose myself, usually at low RPM in 1st and 2nd. I was thinking it maybe the heat shield rattling or something but I'm not sure.

change the fluid. use 80w90 gear oil... its alittle thicker than whats called for (75w80) but it will slow down the sincromesh alot faster which is whats happening. your grinding the sincro's.

?

I recently changed the tranny fluid using Honda MTF and a bottle of Lucas Tranny Fix. Should I go ahead and change the oil replacing it with what you recommended or is what I have in there straight?

that refers to how many trannies have had problems.

i think as long as its changed it wouldnt matter. ive heard nothing but good things about lucas oil additives. i think his major problem is that the fluid in now is old, or it could even be low. but eather way, it needs to be changed.
