Tranny Repair??

99 CL, 59K miles... I had the tranny fluid drained and filled about a month ago at the Acura dealership and it's been acting really strange ever since... shuddering between 3rd and 4th and some rough shifts here and there. My question is, can a transmission have a problem that can be "repaired" and not totally rebuilt? I am debating on whether or not to take the chance and keep the car, knowing the tranny will go out before too long, or take that $2500+ and invest it in something newer. If there's something wrong with it that can be fixed for a few hundred dollars, I'd be okay with that.

Any thoughts? Thanks.

Have you talked to the dealer about your situation? Let them know about it and that you've notcied this after taking it to them. They may be able to suggest a solution and help you out.

I've always told people on this board not to mess around with the tranny fluid if you don't notice a problem beforehand. Normal maintanence on these tranny's can actual hurt more than it help. That includes adding, draining, changing and flushing These transmissions are very particular not only about the type of fluid but how often any maintanence is needed.

To answer your question, yes. There are repairs that can be made depending on the type of problems. You just have to get it diagnosed. It could be something simple. However, usually if it involves a lot of work, the easier and cheaper solution may be to just rebuilt it. Again, it just depends on the problem.

Tranny Repair?

Okay, I know all of the transmission problems with our cars... they have been well documented. What I want to know is the solution. Is there any alternative to rebuilding (besides a tranny cooler install)?

I have a 99 3.0 with 59K miles and I've recently been experiencing the usual tranny problems (shuddering between 3rd and 4th, rough shifts, etc.). What I want to know is, if I take it to Aamco or some other transmission shop, is there anything else they can do besides just rebuild it? My knowledge of transmissions is very limited because I've never had any problems out of one on any other car I've owned. I wouldn't mind spending a few hundred dollars to have it repaired, but if it's not possible then I'll just sell it and invest the $2500 into a newer car.

Any help or personal experiences would be appreciated!!

I just had my '97 CL 3.0 fixed at an AAMCO shop out here in CA. All they can do if you bring it in is run the diagnostic computer on it. If no codes are thrown, then all they can do at that point is take it apart to see what needs to be done - and charge you for that time. Mine had 135K when it went south. It was nearly a full rebuild and it cost $2,800. Ugh. ut it runs fine now and I plan on keeping it for 2-3 more years if I can...

My just about complete rebuild at AAMCO was $2,800 -

2 dealers each wanted $4,500 to bolt in a new unit, and a good private shop wanted $3,500. my parent's friend who owns a tranny shop said it would run $3,500 to $3,000 minimum. That's here in CA remember, where everything is more expensive.

BTW - I called the dealer and asked if there was anything they could do to help. They said if I had the second gen and it was under 100K, then they could help. But as I have a 1st gen with 135K miles, I was SOL. The dealer can't do anything for us unfortunately.
