Tints on my 97 3.0CL

I'd like to get my windows tinted. About 35% all around. What I noticed is that my windows already have this little tint that is factory installed (very very light). I believe it is some sort of tint to reduce the heat inside. What I'm wondering is... Do I need to remove these tints before applying the new tints, or can I apply them over??? How did most of you guys do it?

Thanks,

MontrealCL

Just apply it right over. I have 20% on the back window and 35% on the sides. Looks sweet.....

our cars use heat reflective / resistant glass, which is probably what you're seeing.

I just tinted over it with black tint, 20% in the back and 35% in the front. Instead of the tint having the all black look it has a slight greenish reflection. It doesnt look bad it actually looks nice cause you can only see it from certain angles and the rest of the time it just looks black. Not to mention the fact im sure it keeps more heat out of the cabin.

For those of you who tinted your windows, how did you handle the center brake light?

The guy who tinted my windows removed the 3rd brake light, tinted the whole rear window, then remounted the light.....

if you go with platinum tint you will think black tint looks ghetto and cheesy. at least i did. anyway, i think platinum tint looks much classier for cars like ours. when i think of black tint i think of mustangs, camaros, and ghetto mobiles. just my opinion though!

They removed the light and tinted right over it and then replaced it. It looks much better in my opinion then the cut out for the light but some people say it is illegal in there state. I think Shawn S said that it is illegal to tint over the light where he lives and he would get a huge fine if an officer decided to question him about it. So i would ask the shop.

The regular black tint for all 5 windows would have run me $110 but i decided to upgrade to a tint with a greater heat resistance so it was $135.

had mine done at a lexus dealer and they removed the brake light to tint the entire window. just realized the other day that they forgot to plug the light back in.

They gave you good advice. If you tinted over your brake light that is a sure ticket in the lower 48.

They couldnt seem to care less in Florida. Everyone seems to have it done and i havent had any problems at all. Most people have super dark tints too and some people even have 35 on their front windshields. So i guess it all depends on where you live.

Hey man.. I was thinking of tinting my '98 CL... you have any pics of the platinum tint? I'm in Ohio and apparently the laws here are pretty strict... 50% is as dark as you can get. I was thinking I could swing 35% without most cops noticing, but I don't know if they even allow platinum tint.

Also, where should I go to have my car tinted? The dealer wasn't able to recommend anyone (I know... wtf). -D

I chose to go with 35% bronze. It looks real light so the cops never hassle me and at night, it's just perfect, you can see in, but see outlines of people. I didn't go with with 35% limo because I think the bronze looked better with my color green. The third brakelight in my window is disconnected anyway since I have it on my factory wing, so I just tinted right over it.
