Sucking in water?

Hey i was driving down the street in the rain when i noticed a big puddle so i slow to under 10 and went thru it because i could not get in the other lane. When i went thru it i thought it seemed smaller then i had thought but my car died. I pulled off and tried to restart but no luck until i gassed it and started it like 10 minutes later. There was tons of white smoke (looked like vapor maybe) and a really rought idle but it finally ran normal. What could be the cause of this, i was thinking hydro lock at first but then it started. Was there water in the tail pipe or something? thanks

Exhaust pressure should be enough to keep the pipe from filling with water. Id guess you sucked some water up but not enough to lock the engine.

I think the bypass works but only if its completely submerged
