stereo install question?

Hey guys,

The metal sleeve that goes over the aftermarket deck's metal casing, does the sleeve have to be mounted inside the console first, then after you just put the aftermarket deck inside of it and then it locks into place?

If this is correct, then how do you get the metal sleeve part to stay inside the console area where the factory head unit was removed from, I notice the metal sleeve has a bunch of tabs but i'm not sure if that's just the design or meant for another purpose (I'm not referring to the 2 key tabs on the side to release the deck)? I've been playing with idea of taking the mounting bracket that connects to the 2 bolts in behind the console, and mounting that the aftermarket that way it's more secure from being pulled out, well if anyone can asnwer my questions and give me some tips that would be great, thanks!

You need to mount the head unit on to the metal harness/sleeve (the one with the tabs...) then mount the whole HU + Harness to the location where the factory HU was...

Those tabs are for securing the harness into place...

I'm not really sure i read your post right...but meh...i'm buzzed!!!

Ok, the Metal Sleeve (the metal cage) that fits around the aftermarket deck....how do I mount it inside the console, it doesn't have anything that it can clamp on to (If the cage/sleeve isn't being held up by anything, then how can the whole thing including the deck be supported and secured inside the console?

What are the tabs for, not the key tabs on the sides but the tabs on the sleeve (metal cage), is that so you can pry them up so that they prevent the whole sleeve and deck from being pulled forward and out from a thief?

Here's the pix of one of my HU lying around...

As you can see how the HU is enclosed in the metal cage with the tabs pointing to the sides to be screwed into where the factory HU was... I'll take a pic of where you're supposed to mount the whole assembly to (in dash where the factory HU)...

Note that this is the metal cage for a Camry XLE, so it'll be a little bit different from our CLs...but the concept is the same...

Hey, thanks for sending a reply with the pics, I think I'm getting the concept...please put up the other pics you mentioned you were gonna put up!

So, let me get this straight, basically I take the metal sleeve/cage and bolt it into the console area....once that is secure and supported, the deck will slip inside of the sleeve and lock into place, therefore being supported also?

If this is the case, my next question is where exactly do I bolt or attatch the sleeve to inside the console of our CL's?

**Note** The factory headunit in my 97 CL was being held by a bracket that was bolted in behind the HU, so removing the factory HU was easy, I took off the plastic stripping around, got a screwdriver with the correct socket bit, loosened the bolts on the bracket, the lift up and pull out which was easy...but as you can tell the HU itself was never supported on the sides (like your pic shows of the sleeve with the tabs sticking out on the left and right side), the HU was only supported by that bracket, please get back to me, much appreciated with the help!!

I took pics of the metal sleeve/cage for my deck, it seems it doesn't have tabs on the sides that you can put a bolt through and mount to the inside console, the only tabs it has are the Key tabs on the sides to allow the deck to slide in and out, and little tabs on the sides but none of them allow a bolt to be put through them and mounted anywhere?

**BTW, I'm not sure how to post pics but I'm sure the way I worded it you get the
idea.

anyone?

just wondering is it necessary to buy the plastic mounting kit,i didn't buy one. The deck is wired up, got the metal sleeve/cage and all i gotta do is pop the baby in but that's where my problem is, lol. Plus I can't see how plasic will hold up just the front edges of the new deck, when most of the weight is just being unsupported unless it was somehow fabricated to the bracket that was bolted to the back of the factory HU then to a metal support beam?
