Speedo acting funny???

I have a 98 2.3CL (manual) with 205K miles. I love my car and it’s been great to me. The only non-maintenance items that went are exhaust and one rear caliper.

About a month ago while driving into NYC in traffic my speedometer starting acting twitchy and hopping around all over the place (up to the 140MPH gauge limit). When I got out of the Lincoln Tunnel I shut the car down and started back up and the problem went away. Now a month later it’s doing it every now and then.

Any ideas? I hope it’s not a sign of a major problem like a computer starting to go on me…

Thanks!

When that happened to me, my alternator went out shortly after. But since it's been a month for you, I dont think it's it, but you might want to have it tested at your local autzone.

My friend's 94 accord with 170,000 miles on it had that speedo problem too. Might be costly... it cost him 350 dollars.

Hopes this can give you an assessment if you plan any repairs. Good luck.

Speedo

No worries, it has nothing to do with the computer (well, I'm 99% sure since the same thing has happened to me)

It's either the speedo sensor or the speedometer itself. According to the tech I talked to it is usually the sensor, but in my case it was the actual speedo.

BTW if this helps trouble shoot…

I was using my cruise control last night on the highway (I never do, not sure why I decided to use it) and when the speedo acted up the CC cancelled out (similar to pressing the brake or clutch). Tells me it’s most lucky the sensor and not the actual speedo… sound right?

As a side note, if anyone ever does do a speedo repair, make sure you / or the repair shop documents it etc. Can cause real problems with the DMV (etc) if you don't.
