Speed Sensor (trans.)

I know, I know - everybody is sick of hearing about my tranny problems. Tough.
Anyway, Acura wouldn't help me at all. They basically said to tow it to their shop about 30 miles away and they'd take a look at it, all on my dime of course. I told them to screw and started shooping around for garages. Ended up at AAMCO, only because they can give me a 3 year warranty on it.
I just heard back from them today - they said they ran a diagnostic on it and found that the speed sensor was all F'ed up and was giving back zero readings - which is a problem and could lead to the slipping and missed gears, etc. Anybody heard of this at all/have any experience? The guy hinted it would be cheap, and I found a few things on line saying that this was a common problem.

The final verdict isn't in yet, but I just thought I'd throw it out there if anybody needs work done - have them check this first before they bend you over and say they replaced the whole thing (aka $2000 later).

I'm not sure why, but I would trust what AAMCO says. I took one of my older cars to them at least 7 years ago and they did a great job in fixing the tranny for cheap. Ever since, I would recommend them for tranny work. Especially if the dealer doesn't even want to help.

The guy I spoke with wouldn't say without taking a look at it, but I kept pushing him for a ballpark and when I said $1500 he jumped on it and started saying that was about right. If anybody does end up using AAMCO I would just do a little background on the particular shop (independently owned and operated) - mine was OK, but I found a whole website with people complaining about certain AAMCO shops. Also, they charge $40 for the full diagnostic, which is put towards any work you have them do. The tests sound pretty comprehensive, and they have a coupon on-line to get it for free...

Also, you can get 3 year, 5 year or lifetime warranties which is my biggest concern. It costs you though - about 3 bills for the three year, 5 for the five and so on.
