Speed Governed at 4000 rpms??

well i was driving my car on the free way and all of a sudden check engine light goes on. so then im sitting there like wtf is going on now. and when im in the last "gear" i cant rev past 4000rpms it will just go up to 4k rpm and the start going up and down never passing 4k rpms. does anyone know why?

Low oil is one condition that will cause that (won't go past VTEC engagement point).

Go to autozone, have em scan the computer and see what the code is.

hahaha did any of you guys realize how fast you gotta be going to hit 4K in top gear? I do almost 100 M.P.H. in my 3.0!



maybe you should look there first for answers!

Yeah, it's deffinitely not a "v-tek" problem cause it doens't exist! It's VTEC!

im pretty sure it is a vtec prob. low oil pressure or broken vtec engagemant switch. it wont go past 4k cause the timing above that will advance and the vtec cams "should" switch over. but since they are not switching over it governs it at 4k, so u dont fawk ur motor with the timing advance.

hmm weird stuff well its a auto. and couple days ago i put a bottle of oil in just cause i knew the next day i was gonna do my oil change. and yet still didnt do my oil change sadly i think ive gone atleast 5k miles. and yet now i can go over 4k rpms and yeah i do go about 100mph too. weird stuff. and the check engine light is still on.

i would have agreed about the vtec until u said it will go past in other gears. just go to a local auto zone, advance auto, etc and see if they will scan it for you.

the reason why it won't go past 4K in top gear is b/c your car is saying "hey, dumbass, maintain me!!!!"

sounds like ur torque converter is pre-stalling. did u check ur tranny fluid? (level and color.)

Great. I was just about to post about this but I found it Well, just last night, I hopped of the freeway, and came to a complete stop. Put it in 1st gear, and took the turn at green. And I noticed something different. My exhaust wasn`t as loud as before. I tried to rev it higher to see if it gets louder, and it doesn`t go anywhere pass 4k rpm. I can hear my intake though. I don`t hear my exhaust going any louder. Usually I would be able to hear the exhaust a lot louder than my intake, but this time when I rev it, I hear my intake, and my RPM`s doesn`t go pass 4k-5k`ish. It`s the same with all gears. And earlier this morning, I took it for a spin, hopped on the freeway, I was in 3rd gear, put the pedal to the metal, it didn`t go ANYWHERE I don`t know what is going on.... Please help.

EDIT: Btw, I have a 1999 2.3 CL, 5MT.

its not a vtec problem, vtec kicking in relies on many thing, oil press, and a bunch of other stuff, ive forgotten exactly how it works, but if all the conditions arent perfect for it to kick in it will not limit you to a certain rpm, it will continue to climb the rpms using the "basic" lobes on the cam (it keeps going without switching over to the vtec lobes)

menace - what do you mean by it didnt go anywhere? did the rpms climb and it not go anywhere or was the rpms staying and it just wasnt pulling?

I've pegged the speedo at 140 and kept on going, I'm 99% sure I went above 4K

The RPM needle barely moved, when I floor it, it seems that it is trying so hard to get the RPM up. But, I went to a shop today, and told them to check my car for me, with that computer thing. I asked them to check because my check engine light is on. So they checked, the problem turned out to be that I have a "Catalytic Converter Efficiency Low Bank". He told me it was clogged. And that it`s not fixable and I have a replace it..... I don`t have the money for that. What should I do?

hmmm well this morning around 2am i went to go get shell gas and all of a sudden my check engine light turned off. i guess thats a good thing

This is not always true. If you drive the car while it's cold, it will allow you to rev on the first lobes (still not good for engine). In that case you have oil pressure, but it's just not warm. When the oil warms up, it will allow the switch to the second lobe. If you have a low oil conditon, the car will limit your RPM at the changeover point to protect the engine.

I don't think we all gathered that it was only doing it in 4th gear. Most of us assumed it was all the time. In his case, it is not related to vtec.

get a "high flow" cat on ebay, like 40 bucks, and i think ther are direct bolt ons, cant remember though, may have to get a shop to weld it in for like 20-30 bucks

It`s that cheap?? The first body shop I went to charged me 275 to replace it with a used one. And I went to a muffler shop, and he charged me 600 for an OBDII or whatever.

Sounds like the ECU has gone into limp mode. Pull the code and certainly dont beat the piss out of the car when its throwing a code

DON'T GET THOSE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I got one for my del Slo cause I needed one and it wasn't a cat at all It was a resonator that had the same dimensions as a cat and same bolt pattern. Fit perfect, but didn't do ANYTHING!!! Actually it didn't even fit all that well, leaked like a faucet! I ended up paying 2 hundred something for a new cat.

Well, today, I refilled the gas, 76, 91 Octance, High Performance I think? Full tank, wasn`t really paying attention to the dash cause I was trying to figure out what the problem was. Hopped on the freeway, I was in 4th gear, at about 3k RPM, then downshifted into 3rd, slammed it, and it hit VTEC, exhaust sounded normal, couldn`t really hear the intake, cause the exhaust was loud as usual. And everything was back to normal. The check engine light went off. This whole thing got me very confused but I`m glad that everything is back to normal at least. It kind of got me thinking that maybe because I had no gas?? I`m on full tank now, and everything seems normal. I was kind of hoping that, whatever was clogged in my cat. conv., flew out of my exhaust when I was on the freeway lol just kidding.

the catalyst inside is like honeycomb shaped ceramic. when it starts to break apart it rumbles around. it may be fine for now but it WILL clog again, they are known to glow red hot and sometimes burn thru the carpet in ur car. and if it cloggs when ur at highway speed. u can say good bye to ur engine. a highflow cat will do u no good cause ur in cali and ull never pass smogg with it. ur only option is to get it fixed or park the car. but ur grown and make ur own decisions.

there is an emissions recall on our cars that cover it up to 100k miles. this includes all the emmissions stuff. check on this and u could have a get out of jail free card, on this.

and techinally its illegal to remove a working cat from a car. even if the car is in the junkyard, so be care ful of the used one. it may save u money but if he has a used one then he's pretty shady.

ehhh...sorry, didnt know you were in cali, not an option for you, i keep thinking everyone lives where i live, we have no emissions testing down here...my talong has full 3" exhaust, no cat no resonator no muffler

My dealership doesn't show an emision recal, just ignition.

Ohh, that explains why there is rattling under my car now, shit. I just thought that it was loose and needed to be welded on again, because this happened to my friend`s 240sx (the rattling part, not clogged cat.) and the muffler shop welded it and the rattling went away. What caused the cloggage in the first place anyways? Well, how long will this cat. conv. last me? It`s rattling pretty bad. And I drive freeway a lot also.
