screeching sound

my 97' 2.2 just hit 48k miles and when i drove it today i heard some strange screeching noises. it sounded like metal screeching against metal (or like nails against a blackboard) and only appeared while i was driving at slow speeds (20-30 mph or less)and during braking, on the highway at higher speeds it was fine. does anyone know what might be the cause of this? any help would be appreciated, thanks.

Yup. Replace your brake pads. Brake pads have a metal tab and when the pad wears down you'll start to hear that metal grinding againt the rotor.

It could be the brakes, or the oh so mysterious stone that got caught in my caliper. I didnt drive it for 3 days until it was able to get into the shop (I though my damn wheel was going to fall off, thanks Rick)- haha

If the rotors are ok, if they have any gouges in them, get them turned.
If they are smooth, than you should be alright.
