running rich
running rich
My CL seems to be running rich. I keep my car really well maintained, so I don't really understand why. I don't have any engine lights on, and I have a new O2 sensor. I have also noticed that I am getting terrible gass milage (about 200 miles per tank). I have about 94K miles and it still feels like it's running really well. Any suggested as to how I can make my car run a littler leaner will be appreciated.
I heard hondas in general are tuned rich, not sure how true that is because that doesnt entirely make sense to do. Id get your computer checked for codes because if its a minor problem there wont necessarily be a check engine light. You should definately be getting more than 200 miles per tank. Do you have a 2.2, 2.3, or 3.0?
omg...what year is your car, cause that is covered under warranty......till about 120k i believe....screw 600 on a new egr valve, get your money back man......you could have just cleaned the egr valve yourself for 3 bucks.....usually thatz all it takes.....and yea, our cars run rich naturally....
get a V-AFC II. THat shit will make your car run exactly right inn it's a/f ratio, or you can keep it a tiny bit rich just to be safe, but you have to have the car dyno-tuned to get it done properly. also... if you plan on doing any mods, it's best to wait until you are done modding to dyno-tune it as you wil have to retune it if you get any more mods.

OK... so last night, after going through some of these VERY helpful suggestions, I decided to reset my ECU. I pulled the fuse then let it run for about 10 minutes. After I turn off my car, I put the fuse back in, but because it was very late, I didn't restart the car until this morning. Now my check engine light is on. I assume that it's because one of my sensors finally picked up what was causing my gas mileage problem, maybe? Did I screw something up or did I finally make a step towards progress?

hope that helps
Suggestions, got to Advanced Auto, Pep Boys, or Auto Zone and pick you up one of those pluggin programers, use it to read and fix all your stuff. You can find out what the problem is and reset the car to make the check engine light go off. Its around 50-100 bones alot better than all this paying to have it looked at. I had to replace my EGR butI did it myself and the new EGR only cost me like 200. Sounds like you should just go get you a programer. It may even help you to get better fuel consumption. I have a 98 3.0 wiht 98000 miles and I get close to 400 miles a tank.

please dont tell me u ran the car with the back up fuse out!!!! if u did that is why u have a code. if u pull them it will prolly show a code for everything running onthe backup fuse...like the ecu. what u do is disconnect the battery for 15 minutes. and reconnect it and start the car. neever ever ever run the car withouth the back up fuse out.

Just for the interest sake...
guys, what's your gas milage on your cars?
I have 97 3.0. I have K&N air filter. I can ran appx. 460K (appx 280 miles) until my fuel light goes on. Than i have another 50-60K (35-40 miles) until i feel like fueling up... It goes down to just under 11 L\100 km in the city. I know that most of you guys are mpg born and rased... Sorry, can't convert it for you...
ps 400 miles is WOW. is it mostly highway or city driving?

If you think that your car is taking too much gas then check if you have black smoke coming from the exhust......tell someone to step on the gas real quick and see if black smoke comes out...more than you think......
