Rotors

My driver's side front rotor has a wide groove in it (maybe 1/2"). This is the only rotor with a groove. The other ones are fine. As I'm driving slowly, I can hear the pad (or something) rubbing against something! Anyone have any suggestions as to why this would happen?? and to only one wheel?

Thanks

the groove is on the surface where the pad touches (if that helps...I do not have a digital camera)

Does it vibrate while braking?? If so, it's the rotors and there either warped and need resurfacing or replacing

If it's just a noise, it's probably your pads.

You may have run down the pad all the way to where it's bolted to the pad's metal back. The steel bolts etc may be grooving the rotor.

Way overdue for brakejob methinks.

I bought new rotors and brake pads for the front. Compared to the cost of resurfacing the rotor, it was worth my money to buy new. I haven't taken a good look yet (University life keeps me busy), but I'm very sure the brakes pads are not that worn down that much. Plus, I would have definately heard the warning noise from the pads (if there is one as there should be on every pad)

Are you installing the rotors or having a shop do them?

The '97s are a bitch to replace!

Good luck!

I had a mojor problem w/ my rotors about 3 months ago. The pad was worn all the way down on both the front brakes. The problem was that the person who put the brake pads on b/f I got the car (May '01) put them on backwards. This is the only way the brake pad "warning system" doesn't work. I figured that out the hard way. It was only about $400 to replace the rotors and pads in front. my advice.... forget class, take it into the shop today..tomorrow.. fast.

Well, its all done.$110 cdn to do front rotors and brakes. It cost me about $160 for the parts, so $270 for everything. I'm satisfied with that.

dustbuster4: your were right...the guy said he had a hard time taking off the old rotors, so I'm glad I didn't try to do it myself.

On the '97's, you need to pull the hub to get the rotors off. On the '98/'99 models, the rotors fit over the hub, and come right off.

If you don't have the proper tool to pull the hub, you need to split the knuckle in order to get the '97 rotors off! AND THAT IS A BITCH!
