Replace bearing, 1997 CL 3.0
Hello!
My front bearings are starting to go and I was wondering if anybody replaced theirs by themselves. I once did bearings on Mazda, removed the wheel base and took it to the shop to have the bearings removed and pressed new once in. It was quite a job, especially to loosen the suspension. What are your opinions? Also how much should I expect to pay to have the job done?
Thank you for your help.

Welcome!
I just had my front bearings placed on my '97 3.0CL.
Unless you're extremely adventureous (and very patient), I would get a shop to do it. I took mine to the local Honda dealer. After convincing the techs that my suspension was exactly the same as the '94-'97 Accord V6, they agree to do it.
Keep in mind that I had my bearings changed in conjunction with getting the front rotors replaced. This greatly reduced the cost. If you're anywhere close to needing front rotors (or want aftermarket rotors--like Brembo), get them done together.
Just getting to the bearings is a real bitch! You'll need to split the knuckle in order to get the hubs off. Then you'll need to get the new bearings pried out and the new one's pressed in.
I helped my brother-in-law replace my rotors over 2 years ago, and it took over 5 hours (each) just to get the rotors done--and we didn't even touch the bearings!

Jack up your car to get the wheel in question off of the ground. Then grab the wheel and shake it up and down and back and forth. This will let you know if the bearing are shot. The wheel should not move (except maybe to rotate on the axle).
Another way to tell is by sound. Usually your wheel will start to squeal when the bearings are going.
The most unfortunate way to tell is when the wheel completely locks up while driving! I was in my Uncle's VW Jetta VR6 when his rear wheel siezed while doing 80 mph!!!!! We almost crashed!

I guess it depends on where you live. Generally I find that Acura charges more for the same parts.
Labor is about the same.
The clincher for me is that the Honda dealer is less than 2 miles from my house. The Acura dealer is about 6-7 miles away.

Did you fall under the '97 CL recall? There was a recall on some '97 models for ball-joint failure.
