Removed the intake silencer yesterday...
I was a bit bored yesterday, and my car was going into the shop today, but I still wanted to do one more thing to the car before it left, so I removed the intake silencer. Getting the stuff out of the engine bay was no biggie, but removing the fenderwell lining was an utter bitch because of those plastic clips (which I broke 3 of).
Anyways, the intake silencer, to little surprise, ended up being a complete piece of crap. Why would they design such a bulky piece of crap that sucks hot air into the engine? Seriously.... Anyways, now the intake sounds really, really nice-especially revving through the bottom of second. All in all, not a bad mod for free if you're bored or can't afford an intake. I might get a drop in K&N down the road. We'll see.

it doesent suck air from the silencer. it is just that a silencer. it equalizes the ammount of air getting sucked in thru the inlet and the ammount of air actually going into the intake. it is pointless tho.

I removed mine and it sounded like crap! I have a 2.3 btw. When I stepped on the gas, all I heard was this low drone and the car wasn't even going anywhere. It didn't sound anything like a car with an intake. It was muddy sounding.

Seriously though, by the looks of it, it looks like it sucks in air through from the engine bay, passes it through this huge hulk of plastic, then shoots it up through the filter, then into the engine. For the time being, I like the change until I can afford to get an intake. Right now, I'm really dying to drop my car, and it's in the shop getting accident repairs done and a whole repaint.
I don't think I gained any power, but the sound it makes is really nice for the 3.0. Well worth the 30 minutes I spent taking it out.

most of the gains are produced by a free flowing filter, so its not a waste, not optimum, but for those wanting only very light modding, its great.
my 3.0 has had the resonator out for a year now, sounds better IMO
