Redlining while driving, and VTEC questions...

To show how stupid I am with Honda/Acura stuff (I was a super hardcore DSM guy previously but I need a friggin reliable car), I'm going to ask some questions.

First off, I know that Honda 4-bangers like to rev. They make all of their power at high RPMs.

Now, the engine code for the 2.2CLs is the F22, and the 2.3s is the F23?

What is the max RPM for these engines, and at what RPM do they make their peak horsepower and torque figures?

How often do you guys rev the shit out of your cars when you drive them? Is it okay to shift at 7000rpm every time with these cars? I've heard of people doing this and they said it was fine, but as I said, I don't know much about Honda/Acura so this is why I'm asking here.

VTEC: At what RPM does VTEC kick in on the 2.2s and 2.3s? Does it continue to redline?

Thanks for answering guys, I appreciate it.

i would say it'd be okay to shift a gsr or type R motor at 7K everyday if it's built right. But an f22, i'd have to pass on.

i drive my 2.3 really hard all the time and have had no problems at all. (i've only had it for 18,000 miles tho) Hondas/Acuras can take a beating. I drove my 97 accord really hard too and it was fine. Our cars redline at 6200 and i believe vtec doesn't kick in till about 5000. (pretty wack!) Anyway, I've taken it to 7000 many times, but you actually loose power if you go past like 5800. (from what everyone tells me) Oh yeah, and the fuel shutoff hits at about 7300, and its no fun motor sounds like it blows)

VTEC kicks in around 4300rpm and our peak hp is at 5500rpm. I think fuel cutoff is around 6700rpm. It makes sense to shift at redline so that you enter in VTEC in the next gear, eventhough you start losing power after 5500rpm. I think these engines can take a good beating, just not on every single shift, plus your gas mileage would be pretty bad.

the F series motors are preety low compression

8.8:1 for the F22 series
and
9.3:1 for the F23 series

they have a decent ammount of low-end so you dont need to rag on them around town to make the car move.

VTEC does continue until you bounce off the rev-limiter at about 6600 rpm.

all things considered tho, i would reserve the balls to the wall driving for weekends and racedays. really no sense in waring down the parts for city driving.

yeah, the compression for the 3.0 is different than the 2.2/2.3

VTEC switches cams at 4000 in the 2.2, i would asume it is the same on the 2.3's.
Kits- are you asking what the power band is?
3500-6000 would be the revs to keep it at during an autocross or track day. But that may be a little difficult in an auto.

thanks..

clu..sup man.. thanks for the info.. yeah it is kind a hard to do it on an auto since it shifts by itself.. anyways.. I think I can do this by shifting down to third and pressing the gas hard... thanks again..

I kinda feel that my VTEC kicks in at about 3-3.5k, because before that, it kind of seems like its boggin, and then i get a lil kick at around 3.5k, and after that its all the same. But i'm not exactly sure, as i dont usually punch it that often.

But I would seriously avoid 'revvin the shit out the car' every time. My friend has a 95 Accord EX, and i do believe they have the same engine as our 2.2, if i'm not mistaken. And when he got his car, he redlined every gear, EVERY time. And now, he's facing some serious probs w/his car. A bad 3rd gear synchro, and what seems new is some bad motor mounts, because everytime he shifts now, it seems like his whole engine is about to fall out.

So even though these engines are reliable as hell..they're not built for 'heavy' beating all the time. Once in a while would be okay, as long as you treat her right afterwards But there are few cars out there to handle a hard beating day in, and day out.

Anyway, goodluck to you.
