Rebuilt transmission or Dr. Evil???...

Well, my 97 3.0 is getting ready to s#it on me anytime now...CEL came one twice in the last week, clutch & trans problems was what the code indicated...so now i'm saving $$$$ for a trans...

So which do you think is better? a rebuilt transmission or Dr. Evil? a used/low milage tranny from another car is out of the question since it'll f*ck up again in the future...

If a rebuilt, how much does it cost? How is the quality compare to the doctor? I'm planning on modding the car but right now i don't want to put a lot of stress on the tranny... will the rebuilt tranny have the same problem as the original tranny? Anyone knows how long it would take to rebuild? and who should i go to for quality rebuild?

If the doctor, which one is for the 97 3.0? there's a list of tranny at the website but i have no idea which one is for my car... also, is there any place i can have the tranny installed (in orange county)?...

What about transmission swap to manual? how expensive is it to swap to a standar trans? The auto in the 3.0 sucks @ss....which manual trans is compatible with the 3.0?

Thanks,
ZZZ

Rebuilt - roughly $1,700
Dr Evil - I believe roughly $3,500 + labor
6 speed - In nice words, LMAO! Honestly looking at around $7,000 minimum, if you can find the tranny sold seperately from the engine.

Some expensive parts to think about for the 6 speed swap would be the tranny ecu, and the crank positioning sensor. That sensor alone costs $1000 from the dealership unless you can find one out of a wrecked CLS 6 which is hard to come by anyways. The ecu is another $600.

I got a question about that, would a CL-s Engine and tranny fit in a 99 CL? if so I might do a swap.

I think $7,000 was being nice, it prob be a lil more for a minimum. It all depends on how lucky you are in finding the parts you need at the right price. And then finding a shop that knows what they are doing to put it together. CnC Autotuners can do it for you, but they require a 50% deposit before touching your car.

Anything will fit with the right amount of money. But to tell you the truth, my hood doesnt even close all the way. I have to cut a section off so that it will close. I'll be doing that once my lady leaves back to Cali next Monday. But yes, it can fit in there.

I'm not going to share that information with anyone. But a lot of others factors were involved which influenced the ridiculous price.

Ghostmaster is the man to go to with info on the Dr. Evil tranny. He is the first member in the 1st gen family to have gone that route. He could give you a more accurate quote on the cost of going that route.

Dr evil trans usually costs $4000, but I got in on the groupbuy over at v6-p forums for $3500. Was 5 people for $500 off. Someone over there said they could do $300 off for 3 people, and they already have two people on "the list".

Every transmission shop that I called (that sounded respectable) quoted me from $620-680 for the install.

Keep in mind all the upgrades you get from the dr evil trans, so it's well worth the money, BUT if you don't plan on keeping hte car for a damn long time, or at least till 200k miles then I woudl just go the rout of a regular rebuild. OR if you plan on modding the shit out of it then the dr evil trans is required if you don't want to replace your trans over and over. I think fastvteccl ( the guy that beat the z28) replaced his trans 4 or 5 times.

I don't have it installedy et so I can't really give a review on it, but with the cold weather coming up my trans is slipping more and more, so it's just a matter of time. I would be absolutly amazed if it made it to the end of the year. I'm actually pretty surprised it's still working now considering how hard I've been driving it over hte last month.

It'll fit with the right money and parts. Your car will be down for quite some time though. As for dr evil, like ghost said, if you don't plan to keep the car and be buried in it, it's not worth the 4 grand plus install

You have a 3.5-liter engine now and used to have the CLS engine? They both didn't allow the hood to close?

I own a 1st gen 3.0 CL, not a second gen. The newer gen CL's engines sit higher than ours do.

what about the newer j30s, doesn't one of those have a manual tranny? if the tranny isnt compatible with CLs j30, could you swap the whole engine with the tranny?
