Check out the manufactor's specs on the sub-woofer. It should tell you exactly what you need. You can varry the from the required ohm slighly but you run the risk for frying your head unit. Some units come with a built-in a shut off for just just instances. Now my experience is with home electronics not car audio, so I would ask some at an install place or hopefully someone on the board has more experience than I do.

To add on what was said above, there are many factors involved here. Most car audio subs come in either 4 ohm or 8 ohm resistance. Then there are single and dual voice coil subs. You should also learn about series and parallel wiring. Without this basic knowledge, you can do serious damage to your system and possibly your car.

It really depends on the amp's ability actually. If you try to run a cheap amp at 1 ohm, you're in for a surprise. I've never heard of subs that have varying resistance. What kind of subs you got?
