Q: how do I retard the timing on a 2.2 CL?
Hello,
I just finished installing my ZEX kit w/the +55 HP jetting... I'd like to go to +75, but need to retard the timing.
I've searched the site, and can't seem to find what to do to retard the timing. Do I need a new computer for the engine? Or is the an easier/cheaper way?
My car is a '97 if that matters...
I appreciate your help,
Thomas

Timing Gun
Hi,
A timing gun is used to check the timing... I need to actaully adjust the timing (retard it, as opposed to advancing it). It seems that the distributor is not adjustable, so even w/ a timing gun I wouldn't know how to retard the timing.
I have also heard that even if you do adjust the timing at the distributor, the computer will put it back to 15 degrees anyway (override your adjustment).
So, I'm really clueless here...

I have no idea on this one. I've tried to adjust timing and it goes right back to stock settings.
I think youre stuck with stock timing without a standalone ecu.

ECU
Okay, let's say we must use a stand alone ECU (I'm not convinced of that yet, but for argument's sake)... who makes an ECU for our 2.2? And, how expensive are they?
I'm also wondering how everyone is using the +75 shot w/o adjusting timing????
Thanks,
Thomas

Just thinking "out loud"... when the knock sensor sends a message to the ECU that there is knock. the ECU retards the timing. I wonder if you couldn't trick the ECU into retarding the timing *only* when you engage the N20?? Anyone know?

Knock sensor
Hmmm... are you sure about that? The Acura dealer in Milwaukee says that there is and that it automatically retards the timing when you used lower octane gas when it senses knocking... but also that with nitrous, it couldn't retard the timing fast enough to prevent damage so you shoudn't rely on the knock sensor for nitrous conditions. Also, I thought that practically every modern car had a knock sensor? Am I wrong about this?
Thanks,
Thomas

BTM
Is this what you mean for the BTM? Sounds like this only works with boosted (turbo) cars?

Maybe this is more like something that would work: looks like
it is about $165 and allows you to adjust timing from inside your car:

the f22 doesn't have an external coil and the msd won't work without buying a new cap with extra plug for an external coil and then the msd should work
just buy the sds engine management system and you'll never reach detonation
and i don't think the f22 has a knock sensor
i've never reached detonation w/75 shot but my shit is WET and your shit is DRY
