Pricing A Used CL!?
Pricing A Used CL!?
I am an ex 240sx owner and mustang owner and just sold my last 240sx and now I am in the market for a used 1st gen right now. I just found this one locally, like very close to me. Check out the ad. He said he will take $4700 for it, should I keep looking or jump on it? My options I MUST have are black leather and 5 speed and this car is black which is a bonus. So i am pretty set on it right now. 129k miles is nothing for a honda, correct? Are the 1st gens pretty reliable? And what kind of MPG should I be expecting? Thanks

Well I saw the ad today and just got back from meeting the owner and checking it out. I buy project cars and fix them up and resale them but this time i dont want a project car. I know a good deal when I see it!
The windshield is BAD, it has a pretty large dent in the drivers front fender, both seats had a bad rip in each and the drivers door panel had a large indention in it, although it runs goood, body is in good shape, car is bone stock, 130k miles, although while driving the car the owner is on the phone telling his buddy how he just beat a gt (not cool at all in front of a possible buyer). Anyways, i liked the car alot, it was my 1st honda to ever test drive and i liked the interior (sunroof was fast), the trunk was huge and the motor looked easy to work on. So this one is a no-go. And yes it is cheap compared to the other here in texas but I know i can find a black interior/5 speed that is prob in better condition. So the search continues!

what kind of idiot tells someone over the phone about racing the car he is trying to sell while a potential buyer is right next to him.If the car is treated right 130k is nothing for the car. it might have a few little rattles, but that's all I can see happening.
I know u said u wanted black interior and a 5 spd...but if you're willing to sacrifice a little, you can get a great CL for the price. I'm selling mine.

Kat's car is already off the chain as far as mods go. You could easily drop a 5 speed f22 or h22 in
For those following my post here. I listed a black 97 that I looked at, at 1st I said NO WAY to the car but the owner told me he clearly said he was racing his legend that he also owns and not his CL. Anyways its a black on black in pretty good condition with 130k miles, the seats i wish were better but i guess i can get them reupholestered. If i offer him 4500 cash i think he will take it, should I go for it or keep looking? Thanks
keep looking
i know the feeling of wanting a cl.the first one i looked at had ripped seats and antifreeze in the backseat along with crumbs that could put together a whole sandwhich.i still wanted it. everytime i went looking couldn't find one with low miles, decent condition, fair price.then when i wasn't out looking i ran into my white beauty.she has high miles but is in pretty good condition for a car thats almost 10 years old.(1 owner with svce rcds)don't settle, your the buyer, your in control.unless you got connections the seats are gonna cost you.by the time you get that and other probs you don't see and the issues that a car with 130k is gonna give you the $4500 will not seem like such a good deal.also you dont think if he beats on a legend he didn't beat on the cl think about it....
if you choose this car i hope it's good to you,it is a honda so you have that on your side.good luck and keep us posted

You summed up my concerns. I am in NO rush right now to buy a car and i do want something that has been treated better. And windsheild, seats reupholstered, and dent in door panel are not cheap repairs. So i will continue to look. I am finding a new one for sale about ever other day right now. Now finding a black leather interior 5 speed 2.2/2.3.
And thank you sir, I am very much swayed by what others say but thats okay, I have learned from my mistakes.

for less than 10 g's you'll have a hot h22 cl.something to think about if you plan to mod...
Now I am pretty set on this 97 2.2. 120k miles, black leather/5 speed as I want. The only problem is that the car is 3 hours away from me. Has anyone ever drove to see a car knowing it might not be as good as described? And can someone give me some input on things I should be looking for with these cars that might be costly repairs? Thanks

timing and water pump for sure. That's a good price
So im taking a bus tomorrow about 3 hours away to see the last car in the link posted above. Its exactly what I want and he said the body is in good condition so im psyched and if it doesnt work out then i will come back home and keep looking. No worries at all.
I am ex 240sx owner...we have timing chains and not belts so can someone please advise me on signs to look for with this car? I have owned 4 240sx's so I know what to look for but the Honda world is new to me. Thank you.

Hold up
What area are you in? Noticed Texas plates on that Black CL. If you're in the Dallas area I have a 1997 Green CL 2.2 Premium with probably more miles than you're looking for (178,000) but it looks and runs like new. I'll try and post some picures this weekend. I'd sell it for much less. I've been reluctant to sell it because the car spends most of it's time in the airport garage (travel most of the week).
It's a standard - new tires, headlight lens covers, no dents, yada, yada, yada...

So i took the 3 1/2 hour bus ride to another town today to see the car above and it was nothing as showing in the pictures.
Im still bummed, i lost about $70 but i learned a valuable lesson so no worries.
And savnoems, if the interior is black leather and in good shape then i am VERY interested. Thanks

From the first car ad you posted:
1997 ACURA 2.2CL, 129K miles, black, leather interior, 4-cyl. engine, 5-speed trans., AC, P/windows, PDL, P/seats, CD, cruise control, keyless entry, tinted glass, spoiler, new tires, excellent condition...
How in the hell do rips, dents, a cracked windshield, etc. qualify for an excellent rating? Did you call the dealer a liar?

Although I keep seeing one pop up locally, if only I would drive an auto, I would already have one. BOOO I will continue to look!
Although I do not want to be seen as a douche. I know im trying to find a 03+ quality in a 97-99 for 5k or so but as the one I saw today, it was missing several interior pieces (also some broken) and I know those wont be as easy to find like my previous car. Given I told the dealer that the interior was my biggest concern, and he knew I was coming 3 1/2 hours away to see the car, yet I get inside the floor is covered in dirt and stains with NO floor mats. CHEAP floormats are $15 at wally world! He began then to say "im losing more money on the car if I get it detailed." LOL now I will stick to private party sales. He said his TTL cost for this car in question was $400, weird my 240 cost about $70 to register. Now hes the douche!

buddy, just give in and buy my CL lol. You can always do a tranny swap. I saw in the other thread you posted your next car had to have great paint, and like I said before, it'd be cheaper to do a 5spd swap than get it painted. Everything on my car is new also. Also all the maintenance, like, water pump and belts, which is a 1k job, already done. I'm dying to buy this Denali and need to sell my CL first, its killing me.
LOL but I hear nothing but bad things about the auto trannys and I drive so little that I need the fun aspect of a 5 speed, I never experience traffic even though I live in the 4th largest city in america.
Your car is absolutely beautiful and right now im honestly thinking hard but.....this honda world is new to me. A 5 speed swap on a mustang or 240sx....then okay no problem, but on this cl....pshhh i wouldnt know where to start. Oh well you will see it sooner or later!

And honestly I am purchasing a CL because I want the feeling of luxury and not anything flashy anymore. This is my 240sx that I just sold, I worried all the time about someone stealing it or something bad happening to my show quality paint job, so interior is more of my concern this time.

For what it's worth, I can empathize with you. I finally bought a CL on wednesday after nearly four weeks of searching. It looks like you live pretty close to me, in the Houston area, but I ended up going to Dallas to buy mine. In the end, the patience and research payed off big time. I found a '98 3.0CL with 38,000 miles on it that was driven by a grandma and maintained very well - it feels practically brand new. I ended up talking them down $1700 from what they were asking and feel like I got a great deal. I absolutely love the car and thank myself for resisting the numerous temptations I had to buy other CLs that I looked at and test drove that were not quite what I was looking for, although they could have worked. I think you've got a good start in saying that you know what you want - if you have the time to wait eventually your car will come. good luck.
cheers,
Matt
