Paint Chips

The front end of my Cypress Green 3.0 has a tendency to be prone to knicks and chips in its paint from the slightest of impacts with bugs, pebbles, etc from freeway driving. I've had to apply touch-up paint on four seperate times to "patch" these little blemishes. My car has low mileage and as a result doesn't encounter the "elements" often but I notice everytime I actually go on even the shortest road trips I find something new! I know I could easily put a freakin bra/nose mask on it but I hate the way those things look. Has anyone else been having this sort of problem(s)? If so, I'd love to hear from ya cause my dealer thinks I'm just being obsessive! HAHAHA

Yup, I have a light colored CL and I have chips too. I've notice that the more layers of wax you have on your car (I use Mother's), the less dings and marks you have b/c of the added protection. Other than waxing, and / or a bra, there's not too much you can do....

Ya I think I have the same car you do 97 3.0 in green. I am on the freeway everyday, but its only for 2 exits but ya the front of my car is destroyed from stones. I think I Am going to buy a bra and have my car painted next year.

Hey guys! Hmmm... thanks for the food for thought. I'm a little more at ease now knowing I'm not the ONLY person out there w/ this problem. Regarding the WAX THING, I'm a little curious to see just how much I'm getting for my money cause I get the car detailed at one of the most reputable (not to mention expensive, grr!) places in town twice a year. So, I'll have to check on that. Thanks again! -Kelly

Hey y'all. The rain let up for a bit today so I gave my baby a wash. I took some pics of the chips I had to patch w/ touch-up paint. So, go look at the pics I took today if you want to see those damn things!

The forward part of the hood on my three year old 1998 3.0 CL also is pockmarked with little chips. I drive 53 miles to work each day at circa 70-80 mph so there is oppurtunity for many little impacts. But this problem is much worse than on any previous vehicle. Does this possibly represent a generic paint problem?

I haven't found a huge problem with paint chips (no worse than other cars I've owned), but I did have to get the whole front bumper repainted when I moved away from Florida. Those love bugs do a real number on your paint, no matter how much wax you have on there!

I hear ya about them bugs, Iceman. Whenever I head out of the metro area to head to Idaho or Seattle, my car takes a beating from those buggers that seem to mutate to freakishly huge sizes out in them farming counties. Haha BTW, how many miles you got on your '98 CL?

I just passed 39,900 today. My miles have slowed considerably since I moved to Florida. I use the BMW for most of my driving, and the CL mainly gets me to and from school, which is only a mile each way. (And no talk about what a lazy SOB I am not to WALK such a piddly distance... )

It may be kind of expensive but you might want to look into clear adhesive liners.
http://www.xpel.com/ http://www.stongard.com/ http://www.invisiblepaintprotection.com/ http://www.clearbra.net/

These are made from a 3M product called ScotchCal. There maybe other types of materials used by the various vendors. But all of the materials are basically the same...urethane laminates. They are not supposed to yellow due to exposure to UV radiation and if applied properly, won't peel and can be washed and waxed over. But they cost $$$.

I was so pissed off. Yesterday, after I got off of work, I go out to my car and I see some sh*t stuck all along the side of my car. I'm like, "WTF!" Upon closer inspection, I realized that the damn maintenance guy came and mowed right near my car and shot all his crap onto my car! It's been pretty messed up weather up here in the PNW (go figure) and I don't have time to wash my car until Saturday. I hope that there wasn't any damage or that the grass doesn't screw up my paint! God I hate having to park on the street for my work. This sucks. Ok, I'm done now... I think I'll go pout some more.

The other night i was driving at like 3 in the morning home from another town. I started to hear this funny noise so i turned down my radio and it sounded like rain. But upon closer inspection of my winshield i noticed the rain drops were not moving. they were bugs. thousands and thousands of them coating my entire car. Made my ac smell like a squashed roach so i put it on recirculate. it was horiable by poor baby was turned in to a big bug eatting machine. It was getting so bad the temp was starting to go up as i got to my town(and a car wash) cause no air was getting to the radiator. IT SUCKED !!!! id rather have grass on my car.

That's pretty gross. I thought driving through rural WA and ID was bad. Yeah, I guess grass isn't that bad after all.

Just had to share that with you. Coludent let a prety young lady pout over something. You can always look on the bright side, it could always be worse.
