basically they dont mean somethings wrong with your car. The changing colors just help remind you of needing to service your car soon. At certian miles, the colors will change.

Ex. you get your car serviced at 105K with the timing belt/water pump...etc...(just whatever major service) they re-set it green. Maybe 5K later, it will flip to orange/yellow...then 7500K later, it will switch to yellow/red.

(its just reminding you that when it gets to the yellow/red, it means you've driven X,XXXmiles since your last major service and its about time for the next one.

Does that help? (and yes, its just a color, it dosnt mean somethings horribly wrong with the car. )

actually it doesnt' turn on at certain preset miles. It TURNS on every x amount of miles. It's just a little whell that is connected to your odometer. So if you reset it at 50,000 miles, it will turn orange at 53,000 miles and red at 55,000 miles, just guessing amounts, but that's how it works.

That's how it works, it doens't switch every 3000 miles, I believe it's like every 6 or 8 k, to remind you to change your oil and such. Some cars have electronic computers that track this, as ghost said, it's just connected to the odometer, and counts ticks. If you change your oil regularly, then just reset it. That's what i do when it pops up. Cuz i've already changed the oil once or twice by that point
