it might not be leaking oil, but it could be buring oil....................your valve seals might be shot.

check for oil soot in the tail pipe. Do you see exhaust spittle behind your car?

Exactly how much are you down? One thing you can do... Let your engine cool overnight. Have someone else start it in the morning as you watch the exhaust. Blue tinted smoke means oil is being burned. It's just within the first few seconds you may notice this. If you do see some blue, it means oil leaking past the seals into the combustion chamber.

But again, how much are you down over 1,000 miles? 1/2quart is nothing to worry about really, just top it up. A friend of mine had a Ford 5.0 that was using 1 quart per 1,000 and Ford said this new engine was within spec!

If you notice the blue smoke at cold start-up, you may consider using MaxLife oil that comes with seal conditioners... It won't hurt and it could help.

If my CL burned or leaked a quart of oil every 1000 miles, I would have to put her in the shop. I had a 90 teg. The rear main seal failed and it was an eccological disaster every time I parked the damn thing. Mexicans told me my car smelled like caca because the oil smoked off the exhaust manifold. I spent $700 to have it fixed and only had it another ten months before some dick head rear-ended and totaled it.

PS

The "Mexicans" were some workmen who had gotten out of half-ton next to me in a 7-11 parking lot. One of them looked at the smoke rolling out from under the car, took a big whif and said something about the car smelling like shit in spannish to his buddies.

I am having and been having the same issue on my 2.3 cl. It currently has 120k on it but I think this problem has been happening since around 90k. No leaks but definitly have a lot of soot around the tailpipe. I have always used regular oil but at around 75k I decided to test the synthetic oil and ever since then I have had the problem. I can't see how this would have caused the problem but you never know. So the cost of having a valve job done is around 700?

No, that was a rear main seal. A valve job shouldn't cost more than $75-$100. In fact, If you have a trusted friendly mechanic, he might whip it out for you for less.

What is the oil level after the oil change? I put the required 4.5qt in mine and ran the engine. I was almost at the bottom of the dip stick. I finally put in almost 5qt to reach the full mark.
I change the oil using a floor jack, under the front end, and it seems to drain almost .5qt more than it does when the car is level, as on a hoist.
I has done this since new and it seems to be the nature of the beast.
