Oil Filters

Where is the cheapest place to order the Honda oil filters for the 2.3CL? I had to buy one at the Acura dealership near my house and they charged $11 and I know that is more than it should be.

Personally, I go with Fram Double Guard.

im not down with fram... its more money for that double gaurd, and it just looks/feels cheep as hel to me IMO. I've been using a K&N. I'd suggest that or sticking with honda's. I pay about $7 for a honda filter from my local honda dealer

That price is much better than the dealer. What is a good source for the Fram filters?

Does it really matter what filter you decide to use? I have always used fram myself, i didnt think that it made a difference. What are the benefits of using a k&n or acura over a fram?

Agreed. As long as the filter has a "Single-Pass Efficiency" of 95% (or higher) you'll be fine.

BTW: Honda doesn't make their own filters. They contract with another company (I don't remember who).

I stand corrected; I use the FRAM X2™ Extended Guard Premium Filter Filter (good for 7K miles--which is when I change my oil w/ Mobil 1).

xrunner86x: I pick them up at Pep Boys.

Nippon is the company that makes the filters for Acura/Honda, I'm pretty sure. Anyhow, $11 is just too too much. For that price I'd go Mobil 1 anyday as it is about the same price.

There has actually been some pretty good deals on ebay for these OEM filters. There's a seller named "jdmcivicgirl" (I believe that's right) that always has at least two per auction that comes out to $12 shipped. The seller recently put up bulk auctions as in 6 oil filters ending at $20 or 10 oil filters ending at around $30 so that comes out to a little more than $3 per filter with shipping. Not bad at all.

In my opinion the Fram X2, has the most quality as of appearance and if they cared for appearance then performance must also be of high quality. Their figures of efficiency and what not does seem to rank pretty high compared to others.

To me filters don't really matter but it is which oil I use that matters and how often I change my oil. I do it every 2500mi and I used to change my sparks at the same time, but now I have Bosch +4's and they're money so I'll hold off on that.

I too use Fram, only because its convienent. HOWEVER, I used to buy from a parts store that insisted that Fram spends most of its money on ADVERTISING, and not the internal contents of its filters. He went on to say that he used to have a filter cut open on his counter to show people how cheap Fram was compared to "Hastings" (for example). I unfortunitly never got to see the comparison for myself. I always figured that since he had many other types of filters to sell me, including Fram, and they wern't any more $$$, I had no reason to doubt him.
I've just always held that in the back of my mind. I would however, completely trust any factory filter over Fram because lets face it, when it comes to engines, Honda/Acura know what the heck they are doing, so I doubt there going to endorse a cheap filter to save a buck.
If you want to settle the arguement, go spend $5 on the Fram, cut it open with a hacksaw, then get a honda, K&N, Hastings whatever... and compare it yourself. I for one would love to know which one is really the best.

I tried to change the oil for the first time since i got my CL yesterday. I was disappointed to find i could not get into a position where i could unscrew the drain bolt (i got the wrench on it, but i couldnt torque it enough from the angle i was at) and see the filter. im sure i could do it if i had a lift or something but now im stuck with the overpriced filter.

You dont have a jack? My car is dropped so in order to fit a shallow bucket or anything under neath the car you have to jack mine up anyway, dont forget that its gonna drain. 2 ton jacks are on sale at pep boys I think for less than 20 bucks, Ill have to check on that. ITs nice to have a jack anyway gives you more space.

I wouldn't trust a $20 jack, one of my dad's friends died because his jack failed while he was under the car. Anyway, I signed up for this thing at my mechanic today. I get an oil change every 3,000 miles and a 27 point inspection, as well as a discount on parts and labor as long as i own the car for $140, so it should be worth it. I have two unused Honda brand oil filters for the 2.3CL or accord I am willing to sell at a loss, something like $10 for both shipped. Reply if you are interested.

i bought a 2ton for $25 on sale 8) (Shucks) there's nothing wrong with it... they're all the same. Works really well, I trust that a lot more than the stock scissor jack. Buy some stands. You should never be under your car when its on any jack. Jack stands you can get for like $30 a pair!

I bought a set of ramps for like $40.00. Best $40.00 I EVER spent! I don't need them to change the oil (I have the 3.0--you can get to the drain bolt and filter without jacking up the car), but I've done 2 header installs to date (mine and dajuice27's) on them.

umm yeah nobody works under there car that doesnt use jack stands (sorry thought that was common knowledge). They are these little tripod looking things that go under the 4 metal brace points on the beam that runs along the underside of each side. Sorry to hear about your dads friend, but I leave my car on jack stands for a week or longer and have no problem at all getting completely underneath. I have used a hydrolic jack all my life and never had a problem when things are done correctly and safely. 140 sounds like kinda a rip, I went to my local acura dealer when i bought my car and got a 28 point inspection for free I just told them I would use them to do all the work on my car in the future. Working on your car is always cheaper than using a shop, even if parts and labor are discounted parts are 99% of the time cheaper if you get them yourself and labor is always free. Besides for the $140 lifetime oil changes I guarantee you they use 79cent conventional oil every time not mobil 1

I'd never seen jack stands before. The Cl is my first car and pretty much everyone I know goes to a mechanic. I'm sure .79 oil is fine if you change at 3k mile intervals. It seems like with most oil you can go much longer than that. It says citgo oil on the bill, I dont know how good that is but thats the gas I always get. Would a jack and stands be useful for installing a CAI or are they not really necessary?

well Ive seen people on mobil 1 go up to 7k miles. and I believe you can feel the difference on the old butt dyno with the smoothness of the engine but it could all be in my head. And if you have a 2.2/2.3 its almost impossible to install a cai unless you jack up the car considering you have to take off the front splash guard (under the bumper) and remove the resonator through the underside of the right wheelwell (after you remove the wheelwell splashguard as well) and then install the filter element from underneath.

(dont know about the 3.0's I dont have one)

How long is that good for...for as long as you own your car? If so, that is not bad at all. It'll pay for itself by the 7th visit.

Hyd jack and jack stands are a must. Sometime in your life, you're gonna need them. I got a 3-ton Craftsman jack and stands from sears for $49 bucks. There are great deals out there at sears. It's like an oil pan and oil filter wrench, you don't use it daily...but you sure need them.

nandowong: pureone is pretty good. When I delivered parts for Advanced, all the mechanics would order it for their own cars. But personally, I don't think they any better than Fram double guard or tough guard or whatever they call it. Me, I just use the regular Fram with the grippy thing on the canister I change my every 3K mi. so I don't worry about it too much.
