Odd Problem - Maybe distributor issue???

I'm not new to cars but my new daily driver is a CL 2.3 premium, think I got it at a steal for $5,700 with only 90k...

Anyways, didn't really know how to search for this *issue* and you guys seem pretty decent compared to most boards I frequent...

So my issue is while accelerating, my car does this "jumpy" thing. Yeah, I know, really descriptive. What I mean is it has short, small bursts of power. Particularily it is more noticable while the A/C is on, but is also noticable without. Feels kinda like the timing suddenly, advancing...giving a short burst of power. Annoying and worse off who knows what could be going on that might be pretty detrimental.

I put in new plugs and that didn't seem to help. I do want to and know I should also replace the cap and rotor. I will also be doing a timing belt soon (haven't decided to do it myself yet or not).

Any thoughts or people that have felt this same thing and could chime in I would appreciate it.

Thanks

Chris

Great site BTW...Glad I stumbled across it.

sounds like the idle air control valve (IAC). not too hard to change, u could try cleaning it first, but if cleaning it doesent fix it replace it.

Idle air control valves only help the car get a little extra bit of air at idle...not accelerating which is when this happens for me.

Yes I def need to do that basic stuff, it could be a cap/rotor thing...I was also wondering if the VTEC solenoid was acting up...on my LS turbo integra I don't have to worry about VTEC so I never learned much about it...

Any thing you can test to see if the solenoid is messed up? I'm pretty handy with a DVOM and I have been trying to locate a Helms on here to do some troubleshooting but no luck yet.

On my 90 Legend, oil was seeping into the distributor cap, causing some stumbling. I would clean out the cap and rotor, temporarily fixing the problem, but eventually it would happen again. I replaced the distributor, since it had a bad seal, and problem was gone. Hope that helps...

Bad plug wires can also be hard to diagnose. As they get older, they will develop internal cracks which change their resistance with movement or vibration. If in doubt, change them. It's part of a tune-up anyway...

its the coil, icm, or the o2 sensor
try unpluggin the o2 and see if there is any difference. otherwise, take it up to autozonr and have then test your icm and coil to make sure they are in spec.

check ur plug wires, ours have a tendency to pop out of the holes. and come off the distributor.
especially if ur using bosch platnums.

same thing happens to me i got the 2.3 manual i rarely use the A/c because it makes my car feel like i have 100hp... and the lurching.

never figured it out... one time i got a check engine light for the vtec pump or something... i think it was because i had low oil...

so don't know what the problem could be. still happens to me.

I didnt know Autozone did that for you...

Otherwise its just making sure there is at least 400Ohms of resistance across the (+) & (-) poles of the ICM or coil, right?

I have a DVOM so I'll have to check that out...

Same problem

I had the same problem w/ my Cl. Eventually I took the D-cap off and found that it was arching at the points so I just replace the D-cap and the coil w/ a new msd cap and coil along with some good wires. That got rid of the jumpy acceleration for me. Hope this advice isn't redundant.
