Lightbulb Nitrogen in tires

I read that filling your tires with nitrogen gas is better than regular air. Nitrogen leaks out three to four times slower than air in tires, which means drivers don't have to check tires as often. And correct air pressure saves fuel. Race car drivers and the space shuttle uses it so do anybody uses it for there cl and any difference in increase gas mileage in a full tank?

my only complaint would be the flammability of it. I mean logically think if you drive over a nail and that nail causes a minor spark then into your tire full of nitrogen gas, your tire goes big kaboom along with your suspention and the trail of flames with it. Not sure if its worth the risk. Its a doubtfull situation but a realistic one at that.

Nitrogen is not flammable nor explosive.

Its not worth it.

The only time its worth it is if you are racing a full fledged race car as Nitrogen doesn't expand an contract so much so there is less PSI fluctuation.

werd haha nitrogen doesnt explode, oxygen has more explosive properties than nitrogen would ever have. You light a match and thats oxygen thats causing the reaction !! Your thinking of Hydrogen

in order to successfully use nitrogen in tires, you need a two valve system on your rim...one to put dry nitrogen in, the other to let out the wet air...you can still do it with a one valve system but it isn't as efficient nor effective...some wet air will still remain

some shops will charge you..it's not expensive but not worth the hassle

we use nitrogen in our aircraft tires at work 155 psi. (im a crew chief in the airforce) u can mix regular compressed air with nitrogen and it will be better than just air. liquid nitrogen is the shit too well atleast when it comes to freezing frogs n shit. and your homeboys boots.

Last place I got my car serviced said nitrogen would be two hours more of labour.. I guess half an hour each tire, not worth it to me.

All the tire problems I have had in the past were with older, clunker cars and old or bought used tires (30% of the price of new when I was a student). Ever since I bought new tires and have had them serviced professionally I lose very little air over time and haven't had any punctures or anything in two years.

N2 I think is mostly yet another marketing gimmick designed to get people to buy things they don't need.

we use nitrogen in aircraft tires because its more efficient. less expansion in different climates. un like regular air in hot climates, then when you fly to a cold climate its a totally different pressure.... even altitude affects it. while flying its a trillion degrees below freezing (not litterally) @ 36k feet, then in 10 minutes youve descended to where its 70+ deg, that rapid expansion on regular air would make alot more pressure and take longer to equalize causing an exploded tire when you hit the brakes and they climb to over 800deg.

we have self generating nitrogen carts that pull in regular oxigen and seporates the nitrogen from oxigen and gives us 3k psi all day long.

Costco does it for folks who buy tires from them. My dad has them on his Accord. Sucks that you have to go back to them if your pressure is low.

I had it done at the place that put my tires on and have noticed no gains in mpg or anything performance wise. I live in maine where, this time of year, the temperature deviates alot during the day so wilp99 is right that one benefit is that they pressure usually stays the same and isn't affected by climate. However it is a pain in the ass that i have to go back to tire warehouse if i need to get the nitrogen refilled. They did it free for me b/c i bought my tires new from them but i wouldn't pay for it, like others said it's mostly marketing and has few real world benefits. my
